We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Clayborn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
“My parents gave me what they had.”
My parents were pastors of a local small church in a small town. So, of course, we weren’t rich and neither were there a lot of resources and/or opportunities to be creative. However, both of them were church musicians in that my father and mother, both, played guitar and my mother also played a little piano.
When I was 3 years old, my mother taught me how to play an old nursery rhyme called “Three Blind Mice” on an old upright piano we had in our home. This really started my journey to learning piano. While she did show me a few things on guitar as well, it was my dad who was most influential in that area.
More importantly, because we didn’t have a lot of money to replace things when broken, my dad would try to fix EVERYTHING! This is where it gets critical. My dad only made it to the sixth grade before he had to quit school to find work so that he could help my grandmother to raise his younger brothers and sisters. One day, I saw him repair an instrument cable. Then I asked him to teach me how to do it. He then showed me the tools and materials needed to do something like fix a guitar cable.
All of this started my journey to becoming a founder and owner of a business that includes everything from the creative side to the technical side as well. More importantly, my father taught me to never stop learning. Sometimes life places limits on you but it’s up to you how you handle those limits that propels you forward.
Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a musician, multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording and sound engineer. I’ve always loved doing all of this but when I realized the earning potential of these services, I officially started my business, KC’s Sounds Productions. We do everything from musicianship and production to Audio and Video installation. Whenever my clients present their ideas, it is my job to show them what it takes to make that idea come to life.
My goal is to treat every client and opportunity with respect. No one owes you an opportunity, so when I’m graced with a call to do a job and/or provide a service, I try to remember to always show my gratitude.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, as both an artist and creative, you never know who is watching. I know that’s become more cliché in this era due to accessibility via social media and other platforms. However, we must observe artistry and creativity for what it is; a divine gift. A lot of what we create comes from what we need. I’ve come to realize that if I myself need it, then there’s a possibility that someone else does, too. As a result, I’ve been told on several occasions that someone was touched by my expression of my art. Absolutely everything I do right now in my life started with my love for music. That love has to transcend through every other aspect.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There are a number of lessons I had to unlearn, especially with growing up in a traditional church. But, if I had to choose one, it would be to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. I was told this a lot growing up but I had to learn that sometimes it’s about making the connection more than the opportunity. Not every opportunity is meant for you and sometimes you don’t realize that until later down the road. There has been times I would get calls but not get the opportunity and would wonder why. Later on, I would learn that it was a situation I wouldn’t want to be connected to. Everything that’s meant for you, works out for you. You just have to be a firm believer of that.
