Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Carrao. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Technically, it was an evolving process. Mostly because you’re told you can’t earn money or specifically make a living being an artist. During high school, I was heavily involved with the drama program. When I got to Arizona State University, I didn’t declare a major right away so I could figure out what I was supposed to do. I even took some art history classes, thinking I would eventually study to be an Architect since it was another passion of mine from a young age. However, my second semester I took a Beginning Scene Study class and I got hooked on acting yet again. From that point on, I knew I needed to perform. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles and have been here since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m originally from Chandler, Arizona, and have been in Los Angeles for almost 20 years. I began with the main purpose of becoming an actor, even though I already knew it was not an easy thing to pursue. I was going out on auditions for years, and it basically got to the point where I realized I needed to make some opportunities for myself. I began writing some short films and getting them produced to get myself out there. Working with people on the short films started creating more and more connections with people both in front of and behind the camera. Eventually this also led to creating scripts with a friend turned writing partner, Patricia Rigney. We produced the web series we wrote, the award-winning “Glasscock Park”. Currently, “H.O.E.s: The Bulge”, a proof of concept of our very first pilot script, has been making its way through the festival circuit with screenings as well as winning awards. Now, as a team we keep on coming up with new things and ideas to expand our brand Rigarrao Productions, as well as our comedy chops in general.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I guess the main goal is to keep on going. There are always gonna be highs and lows. You’ll have all these rejections, but then also meet people that really believe in you as both a person and an artist. I still keep striving not only to be more successful in my creative career, but to also keep on coming up with new stories and characters that can entertain and make people think, or laugh, or even hate it. As long as there is some type of response or something that can start a discussion for people, that is what art is for.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Honestly, I just love entertaining people. Whether I’m just telling jokes one on one with a friend, or screening a film at a festival and feeling the energy of the audience from both people you know and don’t know, it’s all just a high for me. And once you complete something, you think about what’s next. So it never gets boring, and always exciting when you can see what new things you can create. It takes a lot of work to do anything creative, so it’s very satisfying whenever anything you do is appreciated.
