We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Burnett Jr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Well I come from a divided home. Not so divided where things were just horrible but my family started young and they really needed time to find themselves as individuals. Both of my parents taught me valuable lessons, nonetheless. My mother’s love is tremendous as cliche as it sounds but she has never gave upon on me despite our disagreements and I can literally never thank her enough for doing so. I owe her the universe and some. Love you mother. My father on the other hand taught me how to become what I wanted to be. Always reassured me to stay focused and what’s for me will be for me as long as I put the energy into it. He’s more of a spiritual guy. Lol
Kevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I’m Kevin Burnett Jr, Owner and Artist of Spicy Champloo. “Make sure you add the jr,” my mother always said.
I’ve been creating artwork since I was in the second grade writing haikus and watching dragon ball Z with my uncles.
Fast forward to today, I’m 30 years old Creating at a level I’d never imagine. Every year I can just see my growth from creating my first book in my grandmothers garage to traveling the world vlogging. To even top that I’ve gotten really into the 3D realm of sculpting plus with my dedication and discipline I can only imagine where it’ll take me next.
To answer your questions about what I would like the world to know about my Art or Spicy Champloo as a whole. Is that you can do it too. Just really put your mind to it and subtract much distraction as possible and you’ll be surprise what you will accomplish in just mere months by finding your passion or flavor in the art of creation. Finding that individuality is what makes it so worth it. Trust me.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think what most non creatives struggle with, I’m going to use my mom for example, is just the ability of understanding the process and how taxing it actually is physically and mentally resulting to things like low income and sleepless nights. My mother is always asking how I do the things I do or where did I learn how to do that. Nine times out ten it’s really just being persistent and staying disciplined. Giving up on worldly things that don’t add value and TIME, which we all know is just the most valuable currency known to man.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
This is a really short and sweet answer but I’d say my magnum opus is really what has me addicted to the creation of Art. Just seeing what I’m capable of now I can only imagine what I’ll be creating at the peak of my existence. It’s is absolutely unfathomable to be honest but I’m extremely stoked. Well guess that was a little longer than expected.
