We were lucky to catch up with Kevin Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Honestly everything I’ve learned has been from either YouTube or trial and error. I feel like my timing with photography has been Gods timing so I don’t need to speed it up. I think the most essential skills in photography are being a student of the craft and being introspective to who you are so that you can really capture what is inside of you.
Kevin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a portrait photographer from Queens New York currently based in Atlanta Georgia. I’ve been shooting for two years. I’ve always loved photography but as a kid I knew we couldn’t afford a camera so the thought of it went away. It wasn’t until I was shooting content in the gym for Instagram that I realized I had my dreams in my hand. From that moment I started taking photography serious and have been “IN LOVE” ever since. I pride myself on evoking an emotion with my photos. I want to be a photographer that shows the beauty of black and brown faces. To show my people in every light humanly imaginable through the lens of someone who is every one of them.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My whole life has been a pivot. Before coming to Atlanta I was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. I had just came back from deployment when something told me that I needed to go to Atlanta and be around an atmosphere that would bring more out of me. I came here as soon as my contract ended really with no money and not knowing anyone. It has been the worst and best time of my life to date. I’ve experienced true loneliness and depression as well as gaining a genuine love for myself. I have finally found what God has called me to do and it has been the best feeling.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is bringing something to life that was inside of me that other people can feel.
