Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
How I came up with the vision for Vital Grace? The vision derived from a conversation that I had with my Grandmother, who had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2015. She had been prescribed chemotherapy, so I inquired about her perspective regarding the the treatment. Her immediate response was, “If it is going to keep me around for a little while longer, then I don’t mind undergoing the treatment process.”
My desire to know more about how she felt regarding the hair loss aspect, resulted in me asking her this question more directly.
This time she replied, “A woman’s hair is her crown, her hair means everything in the world to her, so when she lose her hair she feels as though she has lost it all. But as for me, I can just throw on a wig unit and a ball cap, and go on about my business. But for most women they feel as though they cannot go any further in life.”
After saying this, she closed her eyes and began to take a nap. I sat back in the chair that was at her bedside and began to say a prayer within myself.
I said, “Lord, if there is anything that you can give me to help motivate, inspire, and encourage these women, Lord please give it to me.”
At that moment a seed had been sown by my Grandmother, and God began to fertilize it into what is now a nonprofit called Vital Grace.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think that it is a combination of just loving and caring for people. This is a large group of people who I feel have been neglected. There are simply not enough programs and resources to facilitate their needs.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Building this company from the ground up has been one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Having to learn as I go while maintaining a productive effort has certainly been challenging. Board creation, connecting with the right resources for in kind contributions and financial support, working on events, all of this while coordinating appointments between the client and stylist. There was a time when I finally reached my breaking point and started planning an exit strategy.
