Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Billets. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kevin , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It really all started when I was 7 years old! I began taking private piano lessons as a little boy, not knowing where music would take me. Fast forward 4 years, I was apart of my middle school band…which then led to me being apart of my high school band. Throughout my younger years, I would take annual music exams, a lot of which consisted of classical music/music theory. It was challenging- being so young and having to devote hours and hours a week to something that at the time, I did not value as much as I do today. I would spend about an hour a day going over the same scales! the same songs! It taught me to be disciplined. It showed me that with enough consistency, one can achieve anything we put our mind too. It wasn’t until I got to college and started going out to music festivals/raves, that I really decided I wanted to purse an artistic path. I began learning how to DJ/produce and having a background in music theory has really allowed me to showcase my creativity.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I go by the name Billets and I’m a DJ/Producer based out of New York/Jersey. I’ve been djing for about 2 years now and it all started in my basement! I grew up with a musical background, I’d say it started when I was about 7 years old. I spent my younger years learning music theory and playing classical music on the piano. During my adolescent years, I transitioned into playing covers of popular hip hop/pop music but still kept up with my “Beethoven” side of things. It wasn’t really until I was in college that I discovered new genres, new sounds, that made me fall in love with music all over again. I found myself in Brooklyn every weekend, extremely tapped into the EDM scene and one day I decided, “yup this is what I wanna do with my life”. I bought myself a beginner turntable (DDJ FLX6) and reached out to some of my DJ homies + spent a lot of time on youtube university teaching myself how to DJ; that is really when my artistic career kicked off. I spent hours in my basement searching, mixing, and analyzing music, it was something I became obsessed with. My musical taste is always evolving, I find myself expanding into new genres; and I love it so much. I would consider myself a “House DJ” at heart, but I dabble with many genres, some of which include Techno (very broad, I know), Jersey Club, Baile Funk, and Reggaeton. In the last couple of years, I’ve had the pleasure to not only DJ in New York and New Jersey, but also in places that I would have never imagined like Tokyo and Ecuador! 2025 is going to be a big year for me, I’m planning on releasing lots of original music and hope to share my art in new cities :).
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The energy that I can bring onto the dance floor! Looking up at the crowd and seeing everyone in the moment; feeling one frequency- there just isn’t any feeling like it.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It’s so important to tap into the community! Showing support, showing love, giving artists a platform to showcase their talent is always going to be something that society will have the power to do.
