Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Anderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kevin , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?

In June of 2015, I picked up my best friend, Sadie. I wanted the absolute best for her, so she can thrive in life. I went to the store, picked out the most expensive bag of dog food, and went on our way! Unfortunately that expensive bag had Sadie in shambles. She was itchy, smelly, fur was very coarse, she would get ear infections, and Sadie was covered in hives. So we switched to the next bag. We tried the cheapest, up to the most expensive bags of food. Nothing worked. The vet said we can give her pills, and some shots. No thanks! We researched best diet for dogs and found raw. Although it was scary at first, we made the switch. Within 30 days she was 100% healed.

Right than I knew there was a gap in the industry, but didn’t think much of it. Fast forward a year, while watching a documentary with my girlfriend about the pet food industry, that knowledge of the gap was still there. That night, Sadie’s Select was started!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’ve been a blue collar worker basically my whole life. I would help my dad do mechanic work, help with construction on one of his houses, an eventually became a certified welder. Shortly after getting my welding certifications I began my career in the International longshoremen’s association. Throughout those years I always had an interest in nutrition, and lifelong have been Is an animal lover. As mentioned in the previous question, the business sparked from watching the Documentary about pet food, Pet Fooled. To this day there are still a gap in the industry for a product that doesn’t use any artificial supplements. And that’s where we come in! Sadie’s Select Offers a variety of raw pet foods, dog and cat, That do not use any artificial supplements /filler’s/grains/legumes/preservatives. The same goes for our treats, chews and toppers. Everything we offer is Whole Foods.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

This is a fun one. My girlfriend and I had plans to buy a house. So I worked as much overtime as possible and saved up a good chunk of money for the down payment. During this time is when we watched that documentary and I had the idea for the business. After we purchased the house is when I started funding the business. Every single extra dollar I earned went into the start up costs. I did as much as I can that way, and eventually took out my retirement account. After taxes and the penalty for closing down the account, I was left With a whopping $20,000. That allowed me to buy my 1st vacuum sealer, A bulk order of labeled bags, A designer for the bags, a better website, and a couple days off to continue working on the business. We have been mostly self funded and took out a few square loans here and there for other purchases.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

Simply put, Our in person interactions at the farmer’s market’s, and the quality of our product As well keeps people coming back for more. We hold ourselves at a very high standard, and will continue doing so!
