We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
One thing I think most everyone can come to agreement on is that our parents were not perfect, but one thing mine taught me has kept me going on my journey in more ways then I would have imagined. I remember back in my grade school days my dad and mom would call my older sister, me and my younger brother into their room every night so that we could pray as a family. At the time, I didn’t fully comprehend the idea of faith and praying to a God I could not see. I can be honest in saying even today I still have my doubts with faith and prayer, but anyone who is a creative knows that to succeed it not only takes a firm belief in oneself but also a faith that goes beyond yourself as well. A creative is someone who seeks to bring new things into the world. There is always hope for outcomes and realities whose pathways can’t always be seen. That is the definition of faith. This is why I still choose to pray and have faith like I was taught by parents and I’m grateful that they instilled it in me. I look at my life and I am a creative still going strong, so just maybe it works..
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
“What is You Are Everywhere? What genre of music do you focus on? So are you a composer or a DJ? Are you building a brand or an artistry? Are you creating your own lane or looking to establish a platform to unify other artists?”
Yes. The only way I know how to answer these questions that I get on a continual, recurring basis. There was a time I was resentful that no one truly understood my vision or why I do things the way I do; however, over time and with a lot of perseverance I have come to embrace that those questions are a welcome part of who I am and what I want to do as a creative.
Growing up in a very musical family where my father was a respected musician in the his home country and my siblings were musical prodigies, I wanted to distance myself from music as much possible to establish my own identity. This led me to sports, film and art as other outlets of expression but little did I know I was training myself to be well versed in a variety of channels that I would later on in my life apply to my own music creation. It wasn’t until I was mistakenly placed in an orchestra class in high school that my eyes were opened to new possibilities in music. Never before had I heard composing giants such at Stravinsky, Ravel, or Brahms and I fell in love with how all the various instruments in an orchestra work together to build the greater whole. I took that love and looked everywhere around me for ways in which to develop it whether that was schooling, mentorship or the tried and true: experience by fire.
The name You Are Everywhere (Y A E) originates from a quote from the 13th-centruy Persian poet Rumi:
“Unable to perceive the shape of you, I find you all around me. Your presence fills my eyes with your love, it humbles my heart, for you are everywhere”
For me it represents a a reflection of the creator who created first and we, the reflection of said creator. I wanted to make something that acknowledged God while also representing the eclectic nature of my musical interests and mind. Whether it be an orchestral cue for visual media or a DJ mix for the club, my aim is to create musical experiences that people will cherish while also hopefully opening their minds to different possibilities and genres they maybe wouldn’t have given a chance otherwise. I further love working and servicing other creatives such as film directors, painters or dancers and offering my music knowledge or counsel to help build a greater whole that will impact audiences in profound ways. It’s been said to me that no one knows what to expect next from Y A E and it is different and fresh every single time with each new project. Some argue that’s bad for marketing, but I counter its the best type especially in the new and ever-changing machine of the social media era. Ultimately, I hope to use this platform to unite artists and creatives as well provide opportunity and education for the next generation to believe they can carve their own path no matter how outlandish or nonsensical it may appear to others. If anything, I hope I can inspire even one young boy or girl to keep going even when no one understands you because you may just find that if you do people may just actually start to come around.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I hear something I did impact someone in a way that I never knew it would or even could. For example, I wrote an orchestral piece title “Varna” while traveling in Europe in the summer of 2022. While I personally loved the work, little did I know others would respond and feel the same way I did when I wrote it. A year after its release a friend sent me a note that him and his fiancé would be using the piece as a the processional music at their wedding when the bride walks down the aisle. To reach people in this way… those are the rewards and the reasons I keep going.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
For me success as a creator is not dependent on what the physical outcome is. Society and non-creatives judge outcomes based on the material, I judge the outcome by the immaterial: did the thought or idea from the ether of my soul formulate itself in the way I envisioned? Sometimes it’s worse then I expected, other times even better. That is the reward. We are able to explore, dream and continue to create no matter the external forces that try to stop us. Money, people and circumstances come and go, what we strive to create is forever.
