Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevie Haymore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kevie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think being successful in an industry that I am in is all based on client relationships. I have multiple years of experience doing lash extensions. I am holding 2 sharp sets of tweezers in my hand, along with a strong adhesive. A lot can go wrong if you arent experienced. I have witnessed firsthand how inexperienced lash artists can damage a clients natural lashes. My clients trust me and my knowledge to give them the perfect set of lashes.
Kevie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started out as an art major at UNCW. I always loved painting (mostly portraits). After a few years there, i realized that i also loved doing makeup and was intrigued by skincare. I then enrolled in school for esthetics. After graduating, i moved back to Raleigh and then did makeup for multiple fashion shows downtown Raleigh. Ive always had a good eye at enhancing someones facial features. I worked at a local day spa as an esthetician and got certified in lash extensions after that. A few years later i decided to open up my own salon suite. Thats when Eye Candy Lash Bar was born. I worked solo for a few years before my friends Ally Garza and Lisa Filip of Arch & Edge asked me if i wanted to be a part of their new shop they wanted to open. I immediately said “YES” because these girls are so talented with permanent makeup (brows/eyeliner/lip blush). We had a small shop downtown and recently expanded to a much larger location right in the heart of downtown Raleigh on Glenwood South. I since then changed my business name to “Kevie Does My Lashes”. I wanted a business name directed right to me and straight to the point. Plus, its a catchy instragram tag. When a client is asked “who does your lashes?” they easily say “Kevie does my lashes”.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Instagram has been the best source for new clients. When i started out, i was paying way too much money for major search engines to post my business on top. Social media has been super helpful when trying to attract new clients. Hashtags can be easily searched, people can share your posts, and reels can show up on alot of users pages.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the hardest things for me was bouncing back from maternity leave. I had 2 children pretty close together. During my first maternity leave, i recommended another lash artist to my clients. Lashes are ADDICTING. Most of them came back to me or even waited for me to get lashes again. Then 16 months later i had another baby and had to do the same thing. I was extremely nervous that most of my clients would go elsewhere, but luckily a lot of them stuck around. I definitely had to build some clientele back up, but i am so thankful for my clients who have been loyal and trusted me. I knew i wanted to go back to work and keep continuing to boost womens confidence.
