We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevaun Folks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevaun below.
Alright, Kevaun thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been creating music ever since I was a child in church. The real creative process began in 2005. A man by the name of Kenny Brown was my first manager who kind of taught me about the music business and put me and four others into his home studio where we learned how to really create hits! It was kind of easy to me since I come from a family of so many musical talents, it was evident. Over the years I began to write music for me and others as well. If I would have honestly took it more seriously back then and utilized the resources I had, that alone would’ve sped up the learning process but I was juggling sports and music and that’s kind of hard when you love them both equally. Music just seemed more promising. Being able to have an inclined ear for good sound and continuous elevation were a couple of skills that were essential in helping me grow my skill set. I never stop evolving. When the group had split in 2016, I had to sort of rebrand myself as a solo act. Losing connections and relationships can really set you back if you let it. Also, times were hard for a while financially which kind of put me in a depressed state and that will also hold you back. I had to find myself, I had to find GOD. Honestly, I had given up on this musical journey for a long time. You live and you learn you know?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I had first got into this industry with an independent label called 3mg entertainment and really just took what I had learned from then and applied it to the mindset I have now. I’ve been more focused on the craft I work on nowadays which is production. I’m still an artist and songwriter but that’s easy to me. Making a hit or solid record has always been easy for me to do like breathing. I wanted to challenge myself to elevate so I could become more valuable as an individual. So, I taught myself how to make and produce beats. After about four days of studying, researching, and endless YouTube videos, I had the formula I needed to begin producing for others. Not only do I provide good quality music, but now I also provide good quality beats for the industry whether you’re underground or a celebrity. I help clients find something different other than the norm and if I can’t I’ll sit with the client and create it with them. What sets me apart from a lot of others is that I have patience with the client and really do my best to get them the sound they’re looking for instead of just taking their money and telling them what they want to hear. Got to keep the vibes authentic. Now, I use my gift to uplift and spread inspiration. With all the negative energy the world seems to crave these days musically, I feel it’s our duty to reverse that want for what the soul needs and that’s positive vibes and honest business!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
See, now that I have children who depend on me and a God that loves me, the mission is simple. Build a solid foundation for my family and loved ones and make sure I impact the masses in a way that’s pleasing to god. That’s what really drives me to do better. I come from a very spiritual upbringing if you haven’t noticed.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew the ends and outs of networking back when I first started taking music seriously. But hey, in this industry, no, in this world there are a lot of sharks as well as Allie’s. The sharks don’t want you to eat and will hide those resources from you if you don’t know how things work. So instead, I connected with like minded individuals who don’t mind helping you elevate, even if that means surpassing them. Please do not put yourself through those type of situations trying to be so loyal to others that you forget about yourself. Of course, we didn’t have google then either, haha.
