We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevanna Adams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kevanna, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
My brand “The K Spot” is completely different from the industries standard bakery, because I will not only be opening your typical donut or cupcake shop. I am soon to open a luxury adult bakery and bar. That enhances intimacy and pleasure through desserts and cocktails. Fine dined desserts and other items. I want the community to have a nice place to enjoy something sweet with their sweetie.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My Name is Kevanna, but most people call me “K” hints “The K Spot”. I have been all over the art industry for about 20 years. I started in art, majored in graphic design. Later graduated from cosmetology school to playing with cakes. Major difference I know, but I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do and stick with. I started perfecting my cake skills, but I wanted to figure out how can I be different from other bakers and not have just your typical cake and donut shop. So, I came up with the idea to open a luxury bakery and bar where you can dress up and meet for dessert.
I believe in love, and I want to showcase that in my bakery. I want you to be able to listen to music, poetry, erotica and sex education. Not sex education like birds and the bees ha-ha, but more like tips and tricks to enhance your relationships.
So, my bakery is “The K Spot” and “The K Spot” is a luxury bakery and bar that enhances intimacy and pleasure through desserts and cocktails. We believe that love is not just a feeling, but an experience that can be shared through the senses, particularly taste.
Our Mission is to bring back the old school values of love and connection by offering a memorable experience to our customers. This bakery and bar does not just offer delicious treats and drinks, but also creates an ambiance where our customers can embrace self-love, new love, or rekindle lost love. All because “LOVE DOES EXIST”
Our vision is to build love and communication within our community. In today’s modern society, the importance of love is overlooked. We want to change this by offering a space where people can come together and celebrate love.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am currently in the process of a pivot in my business. Because I don’t know or have had the financial education about running a business, I had to put my business on hold. I am currently still making cakes for events, but had to go back to work full time and start fresh on the drawing board. I went on a whim, quit my job and thought because I had a business plan written out and grant applications done, that I was going to be granted all this money for my business and boy was I wrong. I took a job in banking to learn more about how money comes and goes for businesses.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That really goes back to the last question. I one had to learn, just because grants can help you doesn’t mean that you will actually be chosen to get the grant. Also, you have to be making a certain amount in revenue to even qualify for a loan. Do not quit your job without a backup plan, I thought that quitting my job, that will give me more time to do more cakes and make more money. Consistency is key! You must put yourself out there. I can’t stress this enough. This is something that I was not doing. Social media post, flyers, pop-up shops. You must get people to know you. If they can’t see you, they can’t support you.
