We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kev Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kev, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Trü Scrypture (pronounced True Scripture) was a name that I came up with when I used to rap. I would say Trü Scrypture as a substitute to the phrase “Real Talk”. I wanted my pieces to become conversation starters and one of the most frequent questions about Trü Scrypture was the name and logo. I knew that the name was different and would evoke different emotions in people from all walks of life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Prior to starting my brand, I’ve served as a Senior Director within local government for the City of New York and that career has spanned 20+ years. One of the biggest takeaways from that career is that you truly serve the people. It’s not about wealth or personal gain…you truly touch lives with the services you provide.
I started this brand because I wanted to honor my family and tell my life story through garments. As a career Civil Servant…I’ve served people but I wanted to become an entrepreneur and serve the people on my own terms. Trü Scrypture is a family-based lifestyle clothing/apparel brand that provides accessible gender neutral pieces inspired by my experiences.
Each piece is made with purpose, tells its own story and the Trü Scrypture Fashion Book logo has been a conversation starter since its inception. I offer hoodies, crewneck sweatshirts, t-shirts, and caps. There is always a personal connection to me within each piece and I convey it in the product description and throughout my social media.
What sets my brand apart from others is that I truly live what I put out. It’s about the message and the quality. We are all alike in so many ways so you never know how your story will resonate with others.
The brand has a biblical undertone but that is in tribute to my Mother who passed away a few years ago. I don’t classify this clothing/apparel line as a Christian clothing line but my faith in a higher power is strong so I incorporate undertones from many walks of life into the brand. My influences have always come from music so it manifests itself in everything that I do.
I’m most proud of the pieces in which I incorporated images from son and from my daughter. It was gratifying to sell out some of those items and have my kids witness people wearing pieces with their image on it. This brand is everything to me so I put everything I have into it.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I initially started this brand, the intention was to sell menswear (dress shirts, neck ties, etc). I spent most of my time in an office setting so I wanted to wear my own pieces. I planned for months to launch the brand in that vein and even had “menswear” in some of the earlier descriptions.
The pivot came because of COVID. The world was put on pause and changed the way many of us conducted business. No one was wearing that office attire from home so I decided to shift to casual wear because of the uncertainty that COVID brought forth. That casual wear was not only embraced by men but even more so by women which made me tweak the brand altogether. I guess COVID did bring about some good things.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
This one is simple. Everything about my business is self-funded. I would love to obtain grants and things of that nature but that’s easier said than done. I would take small percentages of my take home pay from my 9 to 5 to help fund my business. I still do it. I’m in a position where I do not owe anyone and I do things on my own terms without the pressure. There will come a time that I will need more but I’m truly growing this business on my own from the ground up.
