Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kev Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kev, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The First time I ever picked up a professional camera, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I kept most of the settings on Auto. I was simply too afraid to mess with the settings because I didn’t know what any of it meant. So I did what anyone else would do. I went on Youtube. I had searched “how to use a canon camera?” (At the time I was borrowing my sisters Canon T6i DSLR camera) A video by Peter McKinnon popped up named “Camera Basics”. He had made 3 parts to that video and I watched i all of them plus more. Peter really explained things well and he helped me understand the world of photography a lot better and how to get comfortable with my camera. His videos also taught me a lot about editing and composition. Eventually I found Manny Ortiz Youtube Channel and I learned a lot about the technical side of photography, such as strobes, lighting, projection, soft boxes, flashes and creativity for photoshoots. To this day I hope my works gets to be as good and amazing as his. Knowing what I know now, I feel I could’ve sped the learning process by automatically as soon as I learned something new i should’ve gone out and test it out and not wait days to try it. I would sometimes during a photoshoot forget what I had learned and I would have to go back and rewatch a video. Some of the skills that I feel were most essential was definitely getting comfortable with my camera and the settings I would want and being quick to change anything while doing so. Also finding my own editing style and sticking to it.

Kev, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Kev Garcia. I had lived in Memphis for most of my life and recently moved to Olive Branch. I randomly became interested in the world of Photography. I learned almost everything by myself through Youtube. I take professional photos for all types of occasions, Portraits, Weddings, Quinceañeras, Birthdays, Toddlers, Boudoir and Graduations. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I don’t only focus on taking the photo, editing it and that’s it. No, though those things are essential, I also focus on forming a bond with my clients, make sure they are comfortable, make them feel beautiful and good about themselves, and overall that they have an absolute blast during their session. That’s one thing im proud to say and to know that they had fun to work with me.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being part of this business is that I am capturing loving, genuine, wonderful, and funny memories for my clients.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal at the moment to hopefully have a studio where my clients can come in to work with me and leave with a huge smile on their faces. I want them to be excited and filled with joy and overall feel comfortable, beautiful and strong.
