We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keturiah Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Keturiah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?

Hello I’m Keturiah Davis Owner of Bodiedbykayy spa.

I started Bodiedbykayy back in 2018 and it definitely wasn’t an overnight success I start it off mobile going to 1 to 2 clients house per day after doing my 9 to 5 at the time. Then my boyfriend surprised me with an office space and told me that I had an option either I be a full-time business owner and grow my business or I continue to work at my 9 to 5 and complain every single day how unhappy I am. So one day after work I visited the office based at my boyfriend surprised me with and I basically went in every single room and started to pray and ask God for guidance because I was just so lost and at shock at the time and I only had 24 hours to make up my mind what I wanted to do. I went home that night and I thought about it and the next day I went into my job I gave them notice that I will be leaving today and I gave my badge and my laptop back and thank them for a successful seven years.
I then went straight to Home Depot and bought some pink paint came to my new office and started to paint the walls pink. To be honest with you I only had literally $250 in my pocket I was dead broke but I had a dream I had a vision and I was willing to put everything on the line to make sure that this business takes off like a rocket.
I started working extra hard to perfect my craft and to educate myself about the industry that I was walking into watching a lot of videos on YouTube talking to other business owners in the beauty industry and just educating myself and making sure that I was on the right direction to success.
I then started to apply for all my business licensing and making sure that I had insurance and everything I needed legally with the state before I started moving forward and then I started growing my Instagram. I gave a lot of free services and just allowed myself to develop the confidence to service the clients with Bodycontouring.
One thing that I do when I provide services to my clients I’m always educating them on what I’m doing so a lot of them encouraged me to start teaching and then I had my very first two students and I actually taught them at my house. I didn’t charge a lot but they definitely learned a lot from me because they are also business owners today as well then I started to promotes and make more videos showing people my work and now I have trained over 150 women. When I started Bodiedbykayy I was seeing one to two people a week and then after that I started seeing 3 to 4 people a week and now I’m seeing at least 4 to 5 clients daily my only day off is Sunday but I enjoy what I do and I love educating and helping these women on their surgery journey and also weight loss journey and just self love .

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is keturiah Davis I go by kayy I got started by this wonderful trainer in beauty school that got me into the industry and I was working with her on the weekends but it was just for fun and then I just started to fall in love with the whole body contouring spa treatment. i’m most proud of the way that I stay consistent and I’m always willing to give a helping hand to any business owner any woman or any man that walks through my door and seeks my assistance or services. One thing that I want all my clients and everyone to know that means that I’m here to help grow and give women or men confidence back if they ever lost it or maybe they just want to add a little bit more sparkle to their life I’m here to system and make sure that they leave out the door happy and satisfied.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

Yes I remember during COVID-19 I couldn’t open my spot at all and take any clients and I basically started to go mobile but I had to wear a mask and make sure I take all the safety precautions and stuff like that and also make a Instagram videos just informing ladies what to do to stay fit and Tus you know make sure that they’re massaging their bodies correctly seeing that we weren’t able to do at one point contact to contact .

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

Basically I funded my business by cashing out my 401(k) and I basically prayed to God it was like if this works out I will definitely put this money back double and sound and I basically did that and took a chance and it worked out amazing for me.
