Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keturah Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Keturah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think to be successful you have to be consistent. You have to consistently continue to work even when you feel like you’ve done enough, there’s also more to be done.
You also have to have courage! There are going to be times when you feel afraid to take a chance. Your going to be afraid to face failure, however courage helps you push through those moments of fear so that you can see what’s waiting for you on the other side.
You also have to be teachable and willing to learn from others and from your mistakes so that you can add to your growth and apply that knowledge to your path to success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who may not know me, my name is Keturah “Kay” Wilson and I am a photographer.
I started photography in 2014 during a very depressing time in my life. At the time I had mental breakdown and I felt as if I lost myself and I didn’t know who I was. So I decided to find something that made me feel at peace. I remembered in high school I constantly took pictures. It was something I loved doing because I didn’t have very many pictures of me as a child. I didn’t have those childhood memories like most of my classmates and I was sad that I didn’t. So during that difficult time and looking back on my childhood I realized that photography was what I wanted to do. I wanted to capture those happy moments, those moments of peace and pure joy.
Although I love what I do, I did have to learn how to be disciplined as a business owner. I jumped in head first with no guidance so I did bump my head quite I bit. It’s wasn’t just about talking pictures anymore, it’s about being productive, professional, organized, and teachable so that I can give my clients the BEST experience during their session. That meant studying my craft, taking classes, watching YouTube videos, reading books, and getting a mentor. That’s what I needed to help me improve as a photographer.
I started off providing photography services for all type of categories, but as time went on I started to find my niche. Which turned out to be lifestyle, fashion, and product photography.
What sets me apart from other photographers is my ability to guide my clients during their sessions. People always tell me they feel uncomfortable during their shoots because they don’t also get that guidance or direction from their photographer. So when they come to me they feel at ease and relaxed . They feel at home and connected with me and it makes them feel confident in front of the camera.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I took a chance and submitted my work to magazines. I was terrified to try and actually put myself out there. But when I finally did it and my work was published I felt so proud because I over came that fear and conquered it. That’s wasn’t supposed to be me. I wasn’t supposed to make it that far. But I did. And it might seem like a minimal thing, but it meant the world to me.
I want everyone to know that I’m here to creat art, stories, happy moments, and unforgettable memories with those who sit in front of my camera. I’m passionate about what I do and my clients and followers mean that world to me. Because of that, I will continue to learn, grow, and become better so that everyone who leaves after shooting with me, leaves with a peaceful heart and mind.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the main resources I wish I knew about earlier on is mentorship. Having a mentor helped me increase my knowledge of photography. I struggled so bad the first three years because I didn’t have that guidance. So after meeting my mentor she helped me learn so much and even showed me how to utilize other resources, like books, Facebook groups, videos, etc. My mentor was such a huge help and a great resource when it came to me building my business and craft.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is constantly changing every single day. This means that you have to be consistent! You have to constantly pay attention to algorithm, the rules, and updates so that you are ensuring you reach your target audience. That’s what I had to do in order to push traffic to my page. With that being said some advice for building your audience on social media would be, 1 be consistent, stay active stay posting.
2 schedule your post if you don’t like to be on social media everyday. It helps so that you can take social media breaks.
3 interact with your audience. It helps them to build a relationship with you and makes them want to interact with you more.
4 do polls to find out what content your audience likes or wants to see. It’s important to know your audience.
5 create photos or graphics that captures your audience.
6 stay updated on any changes to the social media platforms you use.
