We recently connected with Keturah Possue and have shared our conversation below.
Keturah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with the idea to start my bookclub through my jewelry business. I believe that community is very important in every aspect in life. I didn’t want to take the regular business route of building a community so I choose a bookclub to building a community with. The community that I have created has gave my customers or anyone that just simply supports me a piece of mind, inspiration and created friendships and to be truthful I think as a society we lack positive communities and this was something that I felt that God really wanted to do. Writing and Reading has always been my meditation.
Keturah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My Name is Keturah Smith, and I am the CEO of Brown Sugaz co and the Founder of Sugas and Pages. I was born in Queens, New York and my childhood plays a big part in why I started Brown Sugaz, being from a city thats big on fashion, music and is overall very influential, jewelry was the one thing I did not see people without and every single person in my family had HUGE jewelry boxes filled with only GOLD jewelry such as Gold hoops, rings, nameplates and bangles and this was in the early 2000s so you already know how poppin jewelry was especially with the heavy influence of hip hop rap. Since a child my mother always made sure that I had a nice quality pair of baby hoops and a bracelet on everyday and thats where my love from jewelry started.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! I majored in Business my freshmen year in college and gained a lot of educational insight for running a business. Some resources that have impacted me inspiration wise would be the “Dreamville Documentary” and Beyonce Coachella Documentary. Im also a writer so I would write fiction stories to motivate myself.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
When I first started Brown Sugaz it was very hard for me to find a great quality manufacture that specialized in gold filled and above, I learned that I had to be patient and not rush the journey and as long as I do my part everything will align and that is exactly what happened fast forward to now I have found multiple great gold filled manufactures for brown sugaz and I also started handmaking most of my jewelry but I will always continue my research for better
