We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keshvar Merchant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keshvar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In today’s climate of remote work and the rise of entrepreneurship, there’s a lot of talk about how people perceive success. However, what often goes unspoken is the personal definition of success for each individual. Many in society equate success with the opportunity to amass wealth and lead an easy life. This mindset is amplified by social media’s portrayal of hustle culture and the notion of “faking it till you make it.” I, too, grew up subscribing to this belief. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted me to reassess my priorities.
I realized that despite striving to be the best in my field, I never felt fulfilled when compared to countless others. This prompted deep reflection on what success truly means. I’ve come to understand that the conventional markers of success often fall short in delivering genuine happiness.
Over the past few years, I’ve redefined success as the ability to cherish each day and find gratitude in the life I lead. It involves creating a sustainable path toward my goals while appreciating the simple joys of everyday life and the presence of loved ones. For me, success lies in celebrating the small victories, from waking up each morning to every step taken on the journey toward larger aspirations.
Moreover, I’ve learned that success can be shared with others when I remain authentic to myself and design personal systems that align with my values and aspirations.
Keshvar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up doodling and dancing, nurturing a deep love for creativity. Throughout school, I immersed myself in every creative class available, from writing to jewelry making, and, of course, photography. Initially, I pursued interior design and architecture, believing they were the only creative paths with true potential for income and success. However, I soon discovered the limitations of these fields and the importance of people in my creative journey.
I pushed my creative boundaries, seeking work that challenged me, but eventually, the educational system left me feeling burnt out. Taking a step back, I explored my passions, continuing photography and design on the side while immersing myself in bouldering, rock climbing, and yoga. These experiences reignited my joy for storytelling through creative expression and connecting with others.
Returning to the corporate world in design, architecture, and later marketing, I realized my true passions lay outside the office. I thrived in capturing the essence of people, spaces, and moments, rather than being confined to traditional office settings. After years of following others’ advice, I finally listened to my heart and dove headfirst into a full-time photography career.
I am drawn to intentionality and the stories behind spaces and people, whether personal or branded. The creative challenge of constantly learning and creating to authentically reflect brands and individuals is incredibly fulfilling. Every day, I wake up excited to interact with amazing humans and capture fleeting moments, telling stories that elevate the everyday. I especially thrive when aligned with brands that are in the movement space and are sustainable pioneers.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Chris Do on YouTube shares invaluable insights for creatives running businesses. His content has transformed my thought patterns and beliefs, providing me with invaluable guidance.
Additionally, I highly recommend the Midconvo podcast for navigating client interactions and business situations effectively.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of self-reflection and meditation. Taking time to tune in and listen to your inner voice can provide clarity and direction.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve entered a new phase of transition recently. Having relocated from Toronto to Calgary, I’ve established a new home base. Balancing travel between the two locations and exploring opportunities for international shoots has become a part of my routine. Additionally, I’m immersing myself in getting to know my new community and building connections here in Calgary. Having a support system comprised of friends, family, and fellow creatives has been invaluable as I navigate this transition and continue to grow personally and professionally.
