We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KeShun Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
KeShun , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My mother says that she always knew that I would be an entertainer. As a child, she would catch me quoting scenes from ‘The Color Purple or standing in the mirror saying “Hi, I’m KeShun Freeman and you’re watching Disney Channel.” I did a few small plays and then in the 7th grade I did my first community children’s theater show “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. From that moment, I knew that I wanted to perform and that became my prayer. I begin taking risks and trying to learn how to better my voice to become a better performer. I took a break for years to take care of family and play sports. However, through sports, things turned around fulled circle and I was able to take a further step and perform on bigger stages and do tv/film.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in a small city, LaGrange, Georgia. It isn’t the easiest to make it out of the city; however, through perseverance and work, I was able to reach some of my greatest goals. My meal ticket was sports. I played football in high school, then earned a full scholarship from Georgia Tech, and was blessed to play in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. On this journey, I was able to network with so many people and through those connections, I was directed to the right classes and opportunities. I’ve traveled the country speaking to students about leadership with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program. 2021 & 2022 were phenomenal years as beginning for me. I did my first short film with Hillman Grad Production called “Crooked Trees Gon Give Me Wings” that went to the Tribeca Film Festival, I joined the NFL Player’s Choir and we competed on America’s Got Talent, and I was also a guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. These things have led me to grow my resume and perform on even greater stages. In 2024, I was able to perform at the NFL Draft alongside the Detroit Youth Choir.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way that people can support creatives and artist is to actually invest time in supporting their craft. As an artist, you often compare your gifts to others in the same field; however, it is a breath of fresh air to know that people enjoy me for my gift rather than the lack of. Take time to buy the EP, watch the short film, show up to performance, etc. It makes the artist grow and work harder.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s makes me the happiest when I receive feedback from people who say, “….that changed my life.”, “…you don’t know how that performance blessed me”, etc. None of these gifts mean a thing until we are able to reach people and uplift the world. It may be difficult for a person to have access to therapy, so I make sure that my gifts are a form of therapy for viewers. I’ve always wanted God to use me to uplift and shine light. And when I hear that it is being accomplished, I am so elated and blessed.
