Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keshia Lockett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Keshia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I recently launched my first Black Doula Tour. The Black Doula Tour is all about providing education for a pregnant women and pregnant people. Our speakers educate on a wide range topics such as birth, breastfeeding, tongue tie, and pregnancy. The Black Doula Tour is going global to help educate more families.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Empowered Black Doula. My entire brand was created to help empower more women worldwide. My clients trust me as their doula because they know I’ll take care of them. They know I’ll advocate for them when needed and have their backs. Education is so important to me. My overall mission is to make sure everyone is educated on there bodies and the labor process. When people see me they see someone that’s not afraid to stand up. I am so proud of myself for making a difference in the birth community.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After thinking about it for months I decided it was time to stop taking clients to focus on other areas of my career. I launched the Black Doula Tour. The Black Doula is an interactive workshop meant to help guide birth-workers, moms, and expecting parents on their journey. The purpose of it is to provide education that some people may not have heard of.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn what support looks like. Being a doula at times you may have clients that don’t listen to you. The outcome can be negative or positive sometimes. I had to learn that no matter what the decision is always up to them. I provide the education and they make the decision if they want to move forward or not. I’m there to support whatever decision they make.
