We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KeShawn Sensei a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi KeShawn, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
So my first dollar as a creative came from selling pieces of my own artwork. As of now I am focused on creating music, with that being said, my first dollar as a musician, actually came from a private party performance. There were a few people I came across that were very interested in my music, and respected it for what it was. They then offered me a performance opportunity at a private party, and told me to name my price. At the time I hadn’t made any money from Music, so this was a big deal for me. I said $350 and they were more than happy to pay me that.
KeShawn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those who have never came across me before, I go by KeShawn Sensei. I was born in Tyler Texas, but I currently reside in Houston. I’ve always been a creative as well as very expressive. Music was the first art form that I latched onto all the way, and as time goes by the love for it only grows. Currently I’m a few projects in, but I haven’t released my first album per se. That album will definitely be coming in 2024 along with the host of other creative endeavors.
Lately I’ve been getting very interested in film and the different art-forms in and surrounding it. Currently, I am working on a music video for my latest single titled “Zendaya”.
This is definitely one of my favorite songs to date, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what we create when it comes to the video. The Music Video is scheduled to release in November 2023, shot by a videographer in Houston, Texas that goes by John Turrentine & Edited by an editor in Germany that goes by Cstars.
I feel like this is the first step into film for me, but I definitely want to get into screenwriting, directing, and even acting.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, just the overall love for the art itself. It’s like always having someone you can count on no matter what’s going on in your life and always having somebody you can relate your thoughts with. It’s a very comfortable space overall. Even on your worst days, you can take that and make beautiful art from it. I feel like you can’t beat that.
To put in simpler terms, I enjoy the therapeutic aspect of creating art.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think some non-creative people fail to understand that this is what I/we live for. It’s not about taking a certain career path or making a decision to be an artist. It is who you are at your core, and it will never go anywhere. I could lose everything, except my love for music and creating art.
