We recently connected with Kesha MasonCampbell and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kesha , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My book titled “Not Your Journey To Take” was written for individuals who have loved ones who is or was incarcerated. I had two of my six siblings incarcerated at the same time for a long time.
As a Speaker I share my experiences about how not to lose yourself in your loved ones situation.
As a Coach I teach individuals that No is a complete sentence, and I show them how to establish healthy boundaries and prepare ready responses while putting their needs first.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kesha Mason Campbell I am the oldest and only girl among 6 brothers, I have had my share of journeys to take.
Two of my brothers were incarcerated with a combined of more than 15 years, and as the oldest and only female among my siblings, I took on the roles of my brothers’ provider and supporter. This role created many difficult circumstances for me.
I learned very early in life not to mix my life situations. I didn’t let my personal life interfere with my professional life. This allowed me to keep parts of my life separate. I found that people’s inability to separate the issues of their loved ones and their own lives can be unhealthy in some instances.
During the time that two of my siblings were incarcerated, I graduated college, worked full time, and advanced my career in the financial industry all while taking care of them.
I’ve written a book about this experience and also created a coaching program. This program is to help others who are in the same or similar situation and they are not sure what to do.
I learned to not live my life feeling guilty because I put myself first.
The thing I am most proud of is the relationships I have with each one of my brothers.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I realized I needed to pivot is when I realized I was giving more to my brothers than to myself. I was more concerned about them being ok than I was about myself.
When I pivoted one of the things I started doing was making them pay for the money I sent. For example:
If they asked for $100 and western union was $7 they would get $93.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
People resonate with my honesty and authenticity. I don’t hide from my journey and there are so many people dealing with that same but they would prefer people not know. Since I am open about my journey with my incarcerated loved ones people seem to gravitate to me. They learn many lessons from my program that not only helps them with their incarcerated loved one but in their everyday life as well.
