We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful KerryLynne McHugh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with KerryLynne below.
KerryLynne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I love being an actor. I absolutely have wondered and even dreamt of having a more “normal” career path. Especially being an actress of a certain age; I see the women I grew up in with their successful careers and it’s very tempting. But I’ve always said that if I ever found something I love as much as this, I’d do it. I’m 20+ years in and I’ve yet to come across anything.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember, but my high school was not a place where I would have felt safe exploring that. At 19, I took my first acting class in Boston. Soon after, I moved to NYC and attended the 2-year program at the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. I stayed in New York for 2 more years after graduating before moving out to California.
I’ve never stopped studying. That’s part of why I’m so obsessed with this art. Because there is no “end”. There’s always room for growth and new heights. I currently study at The Rehearsal Room Acting School.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is the work itself. Creating a character from the page. It’s exhilarating for me! I’ve always been a curious person. I want to know how you are and why you are the way you are. And this extends to the characters I create, as well.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have been an actor for half of my lifetime.
It’s been literal decades now of joy and excitement and disappointment and auditions and pinned and “are you still doing the acting thing?” and acting classes and moments to live for and fear and building confidence and feeling SO good about an audition but not booking or booking but my line gets cut and red carpets and a Dad that’s never once asked if I wanted to stop this & get a real job and filming on location and headshots and spending way more money on being an actress than I make as an actress most years and crying because what the heck am I even DOING it’s been so long and all I need is a chance to get in the room and self tapes and Zoom callbacks and I would not want for another life. This is my life. Acting is the thing.
