We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerry Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kerry, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The story behind my mission is bringing the world’s treasures of fabrics to your wardrobe. Through my husband job, I’ve had the opportunity to live through out Asia and Africa. With this experience, I’ve immersed in both cultures. With my profession as a Make up artist I’ve used my knowledge of make up to see and use colors, textures and translated that into marrying unconventional fabrics. Kapemono (cape + kimono) is the love story of fabrics. These fabrics are unique acquiring their vibrant and bold prints from Africa and Asia.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kerry Scott, a wife, mother of 4 magical children, lover of life, and a follower of Christ. I started this business in 2016 while living in Accra, Ghana. After falling in love with all of the beautiful colors and textures of country. I designed this African Kapemono,(Kimono and Cape) that is able to be worn in various ways. We make only one of each because you’re unique, so you feel and look regal knowing your the only one with this wearable art..
What set us apart from the rest is…
*Each piece is unique ,no 2 are the same.
*it’s flatting for all body shapes and sizes.
* it can be styled in more than 40 different ways.
* its a fusion of both African and Asian cultures.
* it’s a statement piece, a true love story of fabrics.
when you wear a Kapemono you feel empowered, confident, and regal.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
During cultural day at my children’s school i wore one of my kapemonos. My playful son Cross at some point ran to the field and i ran after him in front of the other attendees. After a visit to the washroom, my usual marketing tactic is usually styling my kapemono differently. This caught the attention of a few of mums who stopped me and asked where i’d gotten the cloth from. I told them that i was the designer and demonstrated a few ways that the kapemono could be styled. They were amused and intrigued to visit the Global glam boutique and one of the ladies invited me to be a panelist at her upcoming women empowerment brunch which acted as a networking chain for Global glam.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Social media comes in handy when posting and advertising on Global glam. When I was in Asia (2010-2014 and 2017 – 2020) accessing social media platforms was quite a challenge and this put a strain on reaching global clients. A lot of business came from in person clients and referrals which was limiting in a way. The power of social media was miss however we maneuvered around the set back and creatively engaged more with the local and expat clientele. We were able to continue to strive in business and grow more than ever.
