We recently connected with Kerry Schwartz and have shared our conversation below.
Kerry , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Helping people has always been something that gives me true happiness and fulfillment. There was a time in my life a few years back where I suffered from a Mental Health crisis. And to be honest, I didn’t think I’d ever come back from it. The two things that saved my life were writing and massage therapy. When I was in the thick of my crisis- I started writing about my traumas and life story. Which led to my Tiktok viral sensation- My book, “Series of Unfortunate Men.”
I was able to turn all of my painful life experiences into purpose by helping women all over the world with my message. After the success of my book & working in the entertainment industry for almost 20 years, I decided to make a bold career change and go to school for Medical Massage. I wanted to help and heal others with massage. Today, I am a proud Licensed Neuromuscular Therapist, and Scar Specialist. Now I use my platform to spread awareness on how massage and scar tissue affect our lives and mental health! While I’m loving my new career, I haven’t completely stepped away from the entertainment world. I recently signed a development deal for a TV Series based on my book, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am most proud of growing up in Brooklyn, NY and who I’ve become- this specific version of myself, I never thought could exist. I’ve always said that I’ve lived 10 different lives in my 38 years. I was a HS dropout, an addict, a reality star, a victim, a villain, etc…. if you google me you’ll be quite entertained, lol.
As far as my readers, I want them to know they’re not alone. That it’s possible to turn their traumas into trophies.
As far as my clients, I suppose my goal is to leave them better than I found them. Although, that’s my goal with anyone I come across life.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
People always ask how I sell so many books. I didn’t hire a fancy PR team- I did my research and learned the science of marketing on Tiktok! I hated the idea of it at first. But once I started telling stories from my book and incorporating them into fun dances etc, they started to go viral and the rest was history. Whether you have a love/ hate relationship with social media or not, it’s imperative to dedicate time to it when marketing a brand, product or yourself!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
It’s funny because I literally have the word resilience tattooed on my body. That word is also probably the first word I use to describe myself. The birth of my book and the career I’m in today was birthed from a very scary mental health crisis I experienced. I remember waking up one night to a feeling ive never felt before. I thought 100% I was having a heart attack or a stroke… I felt like I was dying. I called 911 and was rushed to the ER. After doing multiple tests and seeing multiple doctors- everything looked fine until later found out I was experiencing something called “Nocturnal Panic-Attacks.” So it’s basically having panic attacks only while you’re sleeping. After two sleepless weeks filled with nightly panic attacks, I started to lose hope, and my mind. I was scared to go to sleep because I knew I’d wake up with that awful feeling. I was mentally and physically exhausted and was left with debilitating anxiety and depression. I felt like I was in a battle with my own brain. I can openly admit after months of this, I found myself having suicidal thoughts and needed to get professional help. The Kerry I once knew was gone, nowhere to be found. I was relying on heavy. drugs to sleep and was ready to end it all. I started seeing a therapist who believed the attacks were coming from my subconscious of trauma I hadn’t dealt with over the years and recommended I start writing it all down. She was right- and after 3 months of writing 6 hours a day, I birthed my memoir/book, “Series of Unfortunate Men.” And while I was writing I started doing research on the benefits of massage for mental health and psychosis. You’d be amazed at how sense of touch affects our brain and mental health. I started seeing a massage therapist once a week and my panic attacks started to slow down until eventually they completely stopped. To this day, The message in my book has been helping other women and men around the world. And changing my career from years in the entertainment world to medical massage- I’m able to be an advocate for people suffering from Mental health and spread awareness on how it saved my life. I get to help people every day! The true definition of turning your trauma into trophies! By sharing my story- I hope to help others.
