We were lucky to catch up with Kerry Lett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kerry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A defining moment in my career was during my time as a pre-med student at NC State University. My goal was to become a pediatrician until I took a nutrition class that completely changed my perspective. It was a light bulb moment—I realized I could help prevent diseases rather than just treat them. This insight led me to shift my focus to nutrition, where I could make a proactive difference in the health of mothers and children. It’s a decision that continues to fuel my passion every day.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kerry Lett, a pediatric and maternal registered dietitian and certified lactation counselor. I have my Bachelors of Science in Human Biology from NC State University and my Masters in Public Health in Nutrition from UNC – Chapel Hill. I got into the field of dietetics through a passion for helping others, a series of transformative classes with amazing teachers, and personal life events (a loved one passing from cancer) that all opened my eyes to importance of preventative medicine.
Through Milestones Pediatric & Maternal Nutrition, I work to support families throughout life’s milestones from fertility to delivery to graduation day. I provide individualized nutrition guidance for women trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, and children 0-18 years old for starting solids, picky eating, and health concerns, such as food allergies/intolerances, weight concerns, and more. We also have an amazing lactation consultant, Natalie Jarrett, on our team, who also works to support families feeding journeys alongside me.
I believe that what sets me apart is my practical, compassionate approach focusing on real-world solutions tailored to the family. I think there is too much focus on the perfect diet or perfect solution to a problem when life and health is much more complex than that and families are all unique. My goal is to build relationships with families, empower them to feel confident in their feeding decisions, and support them through every milestone. My goal is to make nutrition and lactation support accessible, impactful, and sustainable in order to help families build a strong foundation for lifelong health.
I am most proud of the fact that we accept all major health insurances, including Medicaid, in order to make nutrition and lactation support accessible and affordable for everyone, because we all deserve to be cared for!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think what has helped me grow my business the most has been working to build genuine connections with others and collaborating. In healthcare, there’s often a mentality of operating in silos, but I see tremendous value in building connections with other health professionals and businesses. Supporting families comprehensively requires a team effort. I recognize that I can’t do it all or know it all, so working with other health professionals and family experts enhances the care we provide to our patients. If we support each other and work together, then we all benefit!

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I’d still choose the same profession and specialty. Early in my career, I was advised to pick between maternal or pediatric care, but I’m so glad I chose both. It’s incredibly rewarding to support families through the entire journey—from fertility to pregnancy, birth, and raising children. Supporting both mother and baby ensures holistic care; if we’re not caring for mom, she can’t fully care for her baby. Supporting mothers and children in their nutrition and health journeys has been deeply fulfilling and aligns perfectly with my passion for preventative care. While the path hasn’t been without challenges, the ability to make a meaningful impact on families’ lives is something I wouldn’t trade for anything. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the confidence and growth in the families I work with and I’m grateful for the chance to do this work every day.
