Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kerry Burki. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kerry, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Everything leads beautifully into the next even if I haven’t always been able to see that while it was happening. I switched from pre-med to Religious Studies in college at Northern Arizona University after taking a class in Hinduism that forever changed my life. That led me to become a yoga teacher after college. As life got busier and more complicated, I wanted to find ways to bring the peace that yoga and savasana bring off the mat and into my life. Ways to do that, both personally and professionally, kept showing up and that led to my book, Tend To Your Vibration. There are 30 techniques to help you get unstuck and into the flow of life. I believe we all need ways to come home to ourselves. When we are feeling worry and fear it is often because we have been spending too much time looking outside of ourselves. Consuming too much social media or news or maybe giving our time to other people and not enough to ourselves can really have us feeling out of whack. All the lessons I teach in my book, coaching sessions, workshops, and classes help to tune out the outer world and get back to your heart. It is from this place that life can flow with more ease and you become a magnet for your desires.
Kerry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Studies and becoming a yoga teacher, I also worked for the wholesale side of Paper Source, Waste Not Paper, and attended the gift and stationery shows in NYC and San Francisco. During that time, I fell in love with design and all things creative. I went on to work for a company called Green Paper Company and then Handmade Success, a small company that helped Etsy sellers grow their businesses.
I always combined these two interests in unique ways like creating chakra cards on stationery to pass out in yoga classes or printables on my website of positive affirmations in a pretty font. I love for things to be pretty and impactful, spiritual and creative. When I was originally working on my book I had planned on it being an ebook but when I sent it to friends to proofread they all said that it HAD to be a printed book because it was so beautiful. So I figured out how to self-publish on Amazon and here we are.
At different times in my life, I have felt stuck, lost, depressed, and confused. I really wanted to share all the ways that I have navigated out of those times in a fun and accessible way. I wanted people to be able to pick up my book and open it to any page and be able to create a positive shift right then. I believe I have done that with this book. The techniques shared are simple ways to help you enjoy life more and draw more things to enjoy into your life.
Using the techniques in my book has allowed my life to unfold in beautiful ways. I now teach about the law of attraction and Napolean Hill’s Think and Grow Rich at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe. I just got back from teaching, yoga on the beach, meditation classes, and how to bust through creative blocks at a conference in Ventura, California called Craftcation. Locally I teach vision board workshops and also Animal Guide Meditation and Painting workshops with my friend, local artist, Kristen Fagan.
I just created Manifesting Sessions on my website to help people use breathwork, Human Design, EFT, and tarot to bust through blocks they have around manifesting their desires in their life and business. I hosted mini-sessions of these at the conference and everyone LOVED them.
For a long time, I didn’t quite understand just how much my emotions, energy, and thoughts mattered. I let life pull me along and I would get all caught up in my head. Now that I tend to my vibration on a regular basis (like it’s my job!) I just want to share how to do it with anyone who will listen.
Here is a quote from my book to help you understand this better:
“Your vibration is your emotional energy. Your vibration changes depending on how you feel and what you are focusing on. Your vibration is high when you are feeling good and trusting that life is working out for you. Your vibration is low when you are criticizing yourself and feeling stuck.
Your emotional energy acts as a magnet that draws more of what you are feeling into your life. Your vibration is created by you, your thoughts, how you feel physically, and what you spend time focusing on.
Basically, your thoughts create your emotions which create your vibration. When you tend to your vibration, you can begin to truly enjoy each moment while creating a life you love.”
It is also important to know that I don’t expect anyone to be happy all of the time either. It is not about that. We are all human and it is so important for us to feel our feelings. I just encourage self-awareness and ways to navigate out of feeling negative for too long.
I endeavor to be a creative and energetic force that lifts people up and makes them feel good, seen, loved, supported, empowered, and magical.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot after 2020, like so many others. I was spending so much time and energy on my business but it wasn’t being reflected in my bank account. I was burned out. In January of 2021, I decided to truly apply what I know instead of focusing on what I thought I should be doing to grow my business. I surrendered. My intention was to tend to my vibration while focusing on the law of attraction and my Human Design, which is a 2/4 Manifesting Generator. This was so hard for me to do. I have tons of energy and tons of ideas. But I decided to see what it would be like if I trusted that the Universe has a better plan for me and see what happened. Since I did this, the owner of the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts reached out and asked me to become a teacher there. I am now teaching about the concepts from Napolean Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. Local non-profits and businesses reached out and asked me to teach Vision Board Workshops to their volunteers and employees. Friends asked for an Animal Guide Meditation and Painting workshop with my local artist friend, Kristen Fagan. I traveled to Ventura, California to be a presenter at Craftcation, a conference for creatives put on by Dear Handmade Life. When I was there I taught yoga on the beach, meditation, vision board workshops, and a new workshop I created called Busting Through Your Creative Blocks using the techniques from my book Tend To Your Vibration. I also hosted office hours for attendees when I was there and people loved them so much. I decided to make it an online offering called Manifesting Sessions that includes breathwork, tarot, Human Design, and Emotional Freedom Technique to help people get past their blocks and attract their desires. My book is sold at Changing Hands and Soul Center in Mesa. All of this started happening when I stopped pushing and trying so hard. I relaxed. I trusted. I visualized things working out. I got into the feelings I desired and so many cool things showed up that I never would have dreamed of. My business looks different and I love it. I still work hard but it is not hard work. Life can be magical! I love where I am and am eager for what is coming too.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is the belief that hard work will equal success. I was doing so much in my business and it was not equaling success. I busied myself everyday and it didn’t lead to much. I was following what business gurus were telling me to do. I discovered that my energy mattered than my effort. Like I shared in my story about pivoting in my business, when I relaxed and focused on myself I became more confident in my gifts and attracted opportunities to share them. I now feel that it is so important for us to tend to ourselves. To nurture our quirks so they can become part of our magic. I have proven that life can be much easier than we are led to believe and it starts with taking time for ourselves with meditation, relaxation, creativity, and anything that makes you feel good about yourself and increases your trust in yourself. The Universe will respond and your life will become amazing.
