We were lucky to catch up with Kerry Berman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kerry, appreciate you joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Thank you so much. The way that I have scaled up over time is by being up to date with the most cutting edge technology in skin care. I started adding new products and services to my menu over time.
I’m extremely excited to say I’m doing that right now! It was a giant leap to purchase my new Tixel machine which is a brand new, revolutionary treatment. It is the most up to date technology in skincare. It gives you the results of a laser, but without the downtime.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was a teenager and in my early 20’s, I had terrible acne. The only things that were able to get my skin under control were regular facials and professional products. That was when I knew what I wanted to do. Day one of aesthetics school I fell in love with this industry and knew I was exactly where I needed to be.
Skincare and helping people to feel their most amazing self is my biggest passion. I offer a wide range of services but my treatments with the fastest results are the Tixel Treatment and the Unicorn Treatment (AKA PRX-T33). Every time I get my hands on a new technology, treatment or ingredient, I fall more in love with this industry.
I am so proud of the ways that I am able to get rid of the things that make my clients feel insecure or self conscious. From acne scars, pigmentation, skin tightening, skin irregularities, and fine lines. I have a solution for all of it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
There are so many ways that I’m grateful to have grown my clientele over the years. First, is just being friendly and open to having authentic conversations with anyone. If it applies, then it’s wonderful if an awesome person that I met at the grocery store or anywhere became my client. I’m so grateful that over the years the amazing women that I own our salon with have introduced me to their awesome clients as well. Ultimately it’s not about making a sale or getting a client. It’s about making a connection and helping people.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
One of my favorite marketing stories was at my very first salon…. I had zero clients. I first marketed to all of my friends and family and asked them to please tell their friends. I wasn’t busy. There was a yoga studio next door and I wanted to be creative and I had the time, so I printed my business cards on labels and put them on water bottles. I would stand outside after class with my basket handing out the waters. I actually got a ton of clients that way!
