We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerri Oberer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kerri, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My husband actually pushed me to start this business. I had been designing small boards for us at home, and for family events. Then it grew to creating grazing spreads at my son’s birthday party and a friend’s baby shower. He said- why not?! I had been toying with the idea of starting a charcuterie business for years, but just felt the pull at the beginning of 2023. Thankful I took the leap!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kerri Oberer. I’m a 35 year old wife and mother to a beautiful 3 year old boy. I was a D1 college softball player (catcher) at FAU. I graduated in 2011 with a BSE in Exercise Science and Health Promotion, and went back to school in 2012 to become a PTA. I’ve been in the physical therapy world for almost 10 years now, and as much as I’ve loved helping so many people recover from injuries, I’ve known it wasn’t my true passion for quite some time. I’ve always been a little OCD, and had a keen eye for detail. I love hosting parties and designing spreads people can gather around for good conversation. So the eye for detail and love for creating grew into this charcuterie business I now call my own. Graze This Way is a one woman show. Any boxes, boards, or grazing spreads you see photographed on my social media come from my two hands only. I’ve had so much fun getting started with my small business this past year!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love nothing more than seeing how amazed people are when I’m done designing a grazing table. No table is ever the same. I completely tailor the design to each customer’s wants/needs. You really can make food look absolutely beautiful!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to encourage conversation. I grew up in a family where all the women hosted large family parties and events, and I loved being a part of the conversations had in the kitchen while the cooking was happening. To some it’s just meat and cheese- but to me, it’s a way to get people to gather around and talk. You can use a charcuterie board or grazing spread as a way to get people together and enjoy each other’s company. Food has always meant gathering for me, and I hope the people who order from Graze This Way feel the love I put into each order, helping them create new memories with friends and loved ones.
