We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kerri Chavez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kerri, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Opening my business, Deep Breath Organizing, was a big risk. At the time, I didn’t have much extra money. I was a single mom, working full-time from home, attending school full-time, and caring for my toddler—all at once. Financially, we were stretched thin.
Still, I felt a calling to help those struggling to piece their lives back together after a loss. That’s how Deep Breath Organizing was born, with the mission: “We assist with organizational needs after the loss of a loved one.”
The journey didn’t unfold as expected. Success for the business didn’t come until over a year later. However, what came quickly was a career opportunity that doubled my previous income. While advertising my business, I stumbled upon a job opening at a hospice agency—a role I hadn’t even known existed!
While I was forming Deep Breath Organizing, I was also experiencing a profound spiritual awakening. At the time, I was ready to publicly share my passion for helping others navigate the challenges surrounding loss and death, but I wasn’t quite prepared to reveal another side of myself—as a practicing tarot reader and psychic.
That part of my journey unfolded later with the launch of Deep Breath Intuitive.
I am currently a Volunteer Coordinator for a hospice agency, as well as the owner of an organizing business and a tarot reading business.
Kerri, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My inspiration for starting this business is deeply personal. I experienced significant loss growing up and, at 19, found myself in a difficult situation as the sole survivor of my family, left with three generations’ worth of belongings. Throwing things away felt wrong, and I held on to items that held no personal meaning for me but were significant to my mother and grandmother. It was exhausting. Over time, I learned to navigate the mental gymnastics required to let go of emotional attachments to objects.
Years later, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I found myself clearing out three homes in just three days. Each home represented a different kind of loss: the loss of a mother, the loss of a home, and the loss of a financial investment.
During that time, I realized I had a unique ability to work swiftly while helping others process the emotions tied to such overwhelming situations. It was through these experiences that I discovered my passion for assisting others during times of loss and transition.
Across all my roles, my goal is to bring clarity and understanding to stressful situations. I specialize in problem-solving while helping others navigate heavy emotions—that’s what I’m here for.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I carried from childhood was the belief that I could never be happy doing what I love. It took me a long time to unlearn that. I always knew I loved serving others, but I wasn’t sure how to make it a reality.
Growing up, I was often told I wouldn’t survive doing what I was passionate about, or that pursuing my dreams was too ambitious because school would be too hard or take too long. During my spiritual journey, however, I experienced a profound shift in perspective. I realized I was capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. The only person standing in the way of my success was me.
Now, I’m able to guide others as they embark on their own spiritual journeys while continuing to grow on my own path.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In November 2023, I was laid off from my job of seven years. At the time, I was set to graduate with my Associate’s degree in Business Administration the following month and had just launched my business. With no other options, I focused on marketing my business, which ultimately led me to my current role as a Volunteer Coordinator for a hospice agency. Over the past year, I’ve balanced this role while continuing to expand my tarot reading and organizing services.
