We were lucky to catch up with Keri Morrison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keri, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
On November 30, 2013 my son Jake lost his life to a drowning accident forever changing our lives. Soon after losing him we were made aware that drowning was the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 and we knew something had to be done. We created Live Like Jake to raise awareness for childhood drowning prevention and provide scholarships for self-rescue swim lessons for families that cannot afford them.

Keri, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I founded Live Like Jake after losing my son Jake to a drowning accident in 2013. In just 10 years we have provided over 3800 scholarships for ISR self-rescue swim lessons around the nation. We have financially assisted hundreds of families with medical and funeral expenses as well as provided 13 grants for ISR instructor training around the nation. I am very proud of all the work we have done and the countless lives we have saved.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Soon after starting Live Like Jake I had a big dream to open an indoor swimming pool so ISR lessons could take place year-round. We were told by many that it would not happen and after years of looking we finally found a building with a landlord that welcomed the idea of having an indoor pool in their building. In November of 2020 we opened our doors and have since had well over 1000 children learn to self-rescue in our pool.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We started Live Like Jake with very little funds. We hosted garage sales and sold t-shirts to raise the funds necessary to provide swim lessons. In 2015 we hosted our first 5k and it was then that we had the funds to really make a difference and save lives. We have added other annual successful events throughout the years including a gala and Watermelons for Water Safety.
