We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kereen Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kereen below.
Kereen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
In 2016 right before I graduated high school high school I decided I wanted to do more with my hair. I had been using drug store hair products but nothing seemed to work for me. I spent the next two years researching and testing out different products and ingredients as well as learning about my hair in ways we never thought were explainable.. After realizing natural ingredients would be a better option, I decided to create different products that targeted issues I was having with my hair such as breakage, dry scalp and dandruff. Throughout this process, I realized tremendous improvement with not only my hair growth but my confidence and decided I wanted others to feel the same. Mykinkykurls became my brand and over the past five years. Our goals as a company is to be as unique and true 100% of the time. Which is why our products are made from 100 % natural ingredients.
Kereen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kereen Brown and I was born and raised on the beautiful island known as, Jamaica. Five years ago I started my hair journey to healthier hair. After struggling with hair loss and hair damage throughout high school, I decided to do something about it. Of course, with anything in life there is trial and error, which was a huge part of my growth and development not just as a person but also as a business owner. Mykinkykurls has products for both men and women and our products are mostly focused on issues that people of color, like myself wish to restore. All products are hand poured and made with 100% natural ingredients and for our accessories, such as our satin bonnets, we partner up with talent individuals in our community to produce good quality products for resell. I am most proud of the authentic atmosphere I have created for my brand. Mykinkykurls has had one motto since day one which is, “Be true to you”, and I want anyone who discovers my brand to know that is what we stand by and our products might just be that little push they need to connect better with themselves.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
The Co-founder of Mykinkykurls is mom, Eileen Chambers. After 6 months of being in business we had a conversation of growing the brand outside of the United States. With her still living in Jamaica this was one of the best business decisions I ever made. My mom has had higher success on the island with day to day sales than I have and for that I wouldn’t want anyone else to be business partner. Thank you Mom!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building my social media audience is still one of the hardest things to do. I started off with 40 followers on Instagram in 2018 and that number stayed that way for a year. After our first vendor ship event in 2019 January we gained roughly 100 followers. I realized networking at theses events I expose my business a lot more. I would gain customers and supporters and that eventually grew my audience on social media. My advice to anyone trying to grow their audience is to be unique and talk about your business with everyone. The more you post the more interactions and engagement your accounts will get.
