We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keray Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keray below.
Keray, appreciate you joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
People in my industry do not share hair care, secrets, such as products used, because they feel like they want the customer to come to them for everything. I am not a gatekeeper. I believe that you have to educate your client, even letting them know good products, so that they can maintain their hair at home.
Sometimes clients come into financial hardships, and that would be unrealistic of me to expect them to come up with money to sit in my chair.
If the client can’t maintain their hair at home, then they can’t get any progress, even if they come to the shop.
I’ve always watched greedy salon, owners withhold valuable information from the customer trying to get all of their money. I just don’t believe in that.
I believe that if you are a good service provider, with a good attitude, the customer will always find their way back.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a hair care, professional, who got started in 2004 as a shampoo girl. I went on to complete my cosmetology license in 2009, after attending high school and cosmetology school at the same time. I went on to be an assistant for the next eight years, because I was scared to take a leap of faith, and be on my own. once I found my confidence, I not only made my first six figures within the first six months of being an independent stylist, but I have gone on to start multiple businesses, such as a hair growth serum company, a hair hot tools company, and restart my hair extension line.
Once I had, my son, I decided to take my talents, part time, and focus on putting my businesses into the e-commerce world. This is all so that I can have more time with my beautiful son.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
For me, that would be constantly reinvesting it myself. No matter what. I always make sure to pour into me before anything else, because I believe in myself so much. There were times when I was late on bills, had evictions notices, even late on credit card bills. But every time I’ve Invested into myself, I always come out on top. I don’t know if anyone understands the anxiety that a three day notice being put on your door, gives you, but I knew that I would get myself out of it because I was investing into much bigger.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
It’s funny, because my partner is my business partner. The fact that we are both strong minded business people is what attracted us to each other. He believed in my hustle and saw my vision, so he started pouring into me, and that took me to the next level, I am so grateful to have my life partner as my business partner.
