We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kera Asberry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kera below.
Kera, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
I serve a lot of people of color. A lot of people of color do not always have the resources or the know how on things. If I can serve my community by providing services to help them elevate, then that’s what I would like to keep doing. My life purpose is to serve others and pass any knowledge I know to assist in others dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Kera Asberry and I became a life coach and Realtor so I could impact lives. The reason I do what I do is for my daughters. I want them to see that you can come from the bottom and still rise to the top. The two industries allows me to live my life purpose. I solve pain points on learning how to go from being a renter to a homeowner. I personally created a free program that allows me to coach potential buyers on what is needed to transition to homeownership. Most Realtors do not have the patience to work with potential buyers who are not currently ready to buy. I look at this as a rewarding opportunity to educate and prepare renters about homeownership. I am proud to say I have created successful programs in both industries that has helped numerous clients.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My entire life came crashing down when Covid affected my home. My husband and I was expecting our first child during the pandemic and I literally did not know who I was married to. We argued constantly, became enemies overnight and I found myself always talked down to on a daily basis where I contemplated suicide during my pregnancy. I noticed my marriage wasn’t healthy and I still continued to keep going for the sake of my family and the fact that we used to be best friends. By the time things felt like they were looking up, we lost both of our vehicles, our home, credit plummeted and we had to try to start over. Instead of having a life partner that wanted to go through the bad with me, I had a spouse that became even more emotionally and verbally abusive. I became pregnant with our second daughter and I didn’t have his support. He even wanted me to have an abortion. I couldn’t believe this was the life that I was living. I didn’t even have him by my side while I was giving birth. He was watching football. One day I just had enough. I walked away from the toxic environment and I chose myself and my daughters. So I left with nothing with a 1 year old and a 6-week old and I had to start over. Most people would have given up but I chose to level up. I got two mentors, finished real estate school, started an empowerment group, started writing for a women’s magazine and started writing my own empowerment book series. I have been inspired to share my story and tell people you can keep going and you will succeed.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy that I have had to grow clientele is being genuine and relatable. People buy into people. If they like and trust you, they will buy into your business. People hate a sales pitch or if they feel like you just want to get something out of them. I usually like to hear how others are doing, check in with them and see if I can be a solution to any of their pain points. I genuinely care about people. People over things is my motto.
