We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keona Pompey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keona , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can mean different things to different people. I feel that whatever success means to you, set specific achievable goals to work towards it. It requires putting in effort, being committed, and persistent even when faced with challenges. You must be open-minded, and willing to learn new things. There will be setbacks and obstacles, being resilient is important. Build strong relationships with those who can offer guidance and opportunities.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am one of the owners of The Beauty Hub, which is Maryland First and Only Salon and Content Studios. With my extensive management experience, I direct, administer, and coordinate the internal operations within an our business. Some of those functions are development of business goals that cover operations, financial performance, and growth of the business.
What sets us apart from others, is we have merged the salon suites concept with a co-working space. We have created a luxurious work environment for beauty professionals that will enable success and innovation in a community atmosphere where they will thrive. The Beauty Hub empowers and supports creatives to pursue their dreams, advance their careers, and experience the freedom of salon ownership.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner Jessica about 14 years ago, through a mutual friend, while I was searching for a hair stylist. I started off as her client, over the years we developed a very good friendship. I always admired her as a beauty professional, educator, and business owner. I watched her grow her brand, own and operating her salon, while still providing a service to her clients for many years. When I decided to begin my journey into the entrepreneur world, I would get her insight on a few things I had in mind. One particular day, I came into the salon, while sitting in her chair, getting my hair done, I asked her “what do you think about salon suites”, her response what “wellll, since you asked, let me tell you”. I valued her opinion and also knew I could not do this alone. I needed someone with the knowledge, experience and successful years of business ownership such as Jessica. Over the next few weeks we talked regularly, she told me her vision, which was way bigger than I could’ve ever imagined, went over business plans agreed on a partnership, and together became the owners of The Beauty Hub. I am honored to have done this with a woman of her stature. Together we are, two multi-dimensional, highly motivated, black women with a proven ability to do something that has never been done.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The Beauty Hub was build from the ground up; while in the construction phase we faced multiple setbacks and challenges. Despite the many challenges and having to make lots of sacrifices, we refused to give up. Through determination and resilience we preserved through some though times, and worked hard towards our goal. I believe staying focused, despite the obstacles you will face, will pay off beyond expectations!
