Keon, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?

I would say that we hope to build a legacy that will be filled with authentic, genuine and transparent moments that inspire and bring people joy. At Atwater Productions & Publishing LLC. we aim to build a safe environment that holds true to creativity and passion. It is our purpose to openly express what self love means and what it looks like to us. We want to spread awareness about the importance of mental health and hope to be remembered for the work we do to help others in their journey.

Keon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Atwater Productions & Publishing LLC. (APP) is a small, black women owned business founded by family members of four generations.

We are Jonnise Atwater, MBA a-k-a Amazon Warrior Empress (AWE) and Keon Atwater, CCP / Chef Keon a-k-a Loc Empress, who are the CEO and VP of Atwater Productions & Publishing, LLC (APP).

Atwater Productions & Publishing LLC. is an Event and Media Curator, we create online content and live events to market and promote our products and services. Not only do we produce our own content, we also provide platforms for affiliated artists and entrepreneurs within the communities we touch.

Our Mission is to curate experiences through our talk shows/podcasts, books, live and virtual events. Our passion is bringing people together to enlighten, empower, and exchange artistry, share ideas, create conversations, and stimulate the minds.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

The greatest lesson that we had to unlearn was thinking that people will pour into us as much as we have poured into them. In the beginning before we discovered our path we operated very selflessly. We constantly fueled other people’s passions while putting ours onto the back burner. We decided to use the energy we could have put into ourselves into the next person, pushing them forward in a journey we too could embark on.

I use to think that everything I did for others would be reciprocated but that isn’t the case. What I had to unlearn in a sense was how to navigate expectations. It wasn’t about what could be received from others but instead what I could provide for myself. This journey we have taken has lead us to so much knowledge and perspective about ourselves. This is where you tend to discover the self love and personal development that aids in the mental awareness necessary to pursue a dream. This awareness is what pushes us forward and helps us on this journey of success. It’s not about who else will support or feed into us, it’s about what we are capable of doing for ourselves. If we can’t help ourselves then how can we continue to help anyone else?

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.

When it comes to a side hustle my family is no stranger. We are from New York so we have been raised with a particular mentality. My mother made it her duty to show us that we did not have to become products of our environment. Despite the odds we could prevail. Due to our artistic nature and my mothers multiple degrees, we have always been on the pursuit for multiple streams of income. This meant utilizing the natural talents that god provided us to create greatness. Entrepreneurship is definitely in my blood and it has surely been an interesting adventure. The family business journey technically began with OMOBA in 2008 which started with one product, a self love basket that could provide a full spa experience. Then in 2015 we elevated our idea of natural care and started Natural Black Unicorn where we provided Loc maintenance services and natural handmade body care and hair care products. In 2017 we launched Gold Unicorn which served as our apparel and home decor line and finally in 2021 we officially established Atwater Productions & Publishing (APP) LLC. With APP we have been able to merge all of our passions and natural gifts to create and curate a space that highlights other small owned businesses as well. Overall, I believe some of our key milestones have been; networking with various artists and entertainers in the industry, helping other small owned businesses grow and lastly learning to be more vulnerable with our art as we move along. This journey is not easy but it is surely worth it. We have learned that it is most important to take each moment as a lesson to be applied as we continue to improve our business and pay it forward.
