We recently connected with Keolia Edwards and have shared our conversation below.
Keolia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I am hoping to leave a legacy centered around my love for God which is the reason I have been able to persevere and make it to where I am currently. And I know The Lord is my drive and the reason for the growth that I have and the growth and success that is yet to come. I am hoping that after I am no longer here on earth that people will say that because I put The Lord first in my life, that The Lord set me and my family up for success. I hope hoping that everyone will see my love for my son and family. I want everyone to say despite every obstacle that I face I didn’t give up. Despite having absolutely every opportunity to give up and throw in the towel that I didn’t. I want to continue to do all that I can; no matter what I’m faced with; to make life better and as less as a struggle as possible for my family. I want to help others in as many ways as I possibly can. I want people to look back on what has been built and how others have been helped as a result of this business and say ” That was not just a business, it was not just about cakes and desserts for her. But it was truly her ministry!” I want to be remembered for caring for others, displaying genuine and Godly love. I want to be remembered for the taste as well as the look of my desserts and treats. I want to be remembered for my compassion for others. I want to be remembered for my integrity in business as well.
Keolia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a child of God and full-time mom first and foremost. I love The Lord with all of my heart and my son also. I am very big on family and cultivating these relationships. After experiencing several health battles (PCOS, endometrial cancer, issues with infertility, seizures, concussions, a traumatic brain injury, etc.) I was forced to stop working both my full-time along with my part-time job. Yes, I was a workaholic. All of my independence was stripped. The rug was pulled right from under my feet.
I was forced to relearn and regain a lot in life. I had an infant at the time at home who still needed to be taken care of. Life was still happening and had to be lived. I was unsure of how that would happen. But… with God, prayer, and the absolute best support system anyone could ask for a change was made. I’ve always loved to cater to others and make people happy with my food. I cook/bake with love. I pray over everything that my hands touch and pray that whoever consumes what my hands touch is blessed.
Blessed and touched in whatever area they need it. It’s not just baking for me, it’s my ministry. I love being as creative as possible and helping fulfill a need for someone. So how would I help? How could I cater to others and help them celebrate or make a moment in their lives just a little bit more memorable? How could I honor my son and include him (because he loves to cook and make others just as happy as I do)? What could we do to put a smile on others’ faces, and in their hearts? How could we share some of our love with others? It was in that time of prayer and seeking direction from The Lord that Cam’s Sweet Treats was born. Which then branched into catering in addition to custom desserts for people. Following that my entire immediate family joined together to pull a few visions together and a family-owned Food Truck was started as well.
There have been lots of speed bumps and hills and rocky paths. The journey has included seizures and loss of speech at times. Having to practice and remake items.
Having to refer back to some of my recipes repeatedly due to the brain injury and memory loss that has been experienced. But I do it because I refuse to be defeated. I’m determined to get the job done. In my moments of traveling the rocky road, I think that “this may be the order that will bless a life in some form.” I think of my son & family; the reason that I began this journey. I think about the person or people that have ordered and what their need is. And I am determined to fulfill it. I remember that the Lord has not done as much for me as he has to leave me defeated at this point!
From the desserts to the families catering and food truck we have lots to offer. We cook and serve with love. We can offer custom designer cakes and treats for any occasion. We also offer total catering and decorating services for any event. We will come into an empty room and totally set it up and then provide the food and cater and serve it as well as have the capabilities to break it down. it’s a one stop shop. We can serve from our food truck for any caliber event. We do have set menu items but can customize a menu for your event based upon the needs of the client.
No need to worry about the work involved in the preparation in cooking, serving or even the idea for the design. Allow us to solve that problem for you. Do you need to celebrate a loved one for a special occasion such as wedding, birthday or even celebrate them during a memorial or repass? Do you need food for a corporate event or church anniversary? Do you have a small crowd or a massive crowd that needs to be fed? Allow us to come in and solve that problem as well.
I think that fact that we are a family business and operate with so much love and integrity set us apart from others. Also, the fact that we take our clients’ needs and concerns into consideration as well. We want to be able to provide you with what you need and want and will be happy with.
I am most proud to say that not only has The Lord blessed me to be on this journey, but he has allowed my and my family to-do it together. He has given us similar visions. We help each other do what the other loves to do… But we are able to join forces and be more impactful in that way. Also the fact that my son loves people and helping to be a blessing to others as well, even at the current age if 5 years old.
Just know that as a potential client or follower or fan that we will treat you like family. We will care for your event or celebration just like it was our very own. We take our craft seriously and we only want to be a blessing to you and your life.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I had no way to fund a business. I had no funds. Zero dollars and no income. Outside of The Lord it was not possible. I did some research to find out what I needed to start and placed the items in a cart online. I prayed and left it to God. The same day i randomly received funds from 2 people which was exactly what I needed to place my order. Outside of that it was been using what comes in from orders to fund the next project. I am in need of help with funding or finding new avenues to generate additional funding for business.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This entire process has taken resilience. From The seizures and traumatic brain injury to just needing to know what step to take next. I am determined not to fail. Determined not to give up. And after battles of losing speech or a seizure I get up when I’m able and try again. That may be the very order that blesses someone’s life in a major way. I always try to focus on the reasons this journey was started and who is counting on me. And I let that be my motivation to keep going and be as resilient as possible.
