We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenzie Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenzie below.
Alright, Kenzie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I never thought that I’d be doing what I’m doing today! When I first began pursuing photography, weddings weren’t something that I was really interested in. I photographed lots of families and seniors and occasionally couples but never a wedding. I really had no understanding of what should be remembered about a wedding or how many significant little moments take place throughout the day. All of this changed when I became a bride. My wedding day transformed how I view wedding photography. When we got our wedding photos back, I was amazed at how I was taken back to the day and able to relive it so vividly (thanks to the amazing Cass and Ty Photo Co). Your wedding day truly does go by just as quickly as everyone warns you. There’s so much to do and so much to take in, there’s no way to be present for every single special moment. That was something I loved about going through our wedding photos. I got to witness things that I wasn’t able to be present for, like my brothers helping each other get ready. Or our family members eating pizza before the ceremony. These moments weren’t posed or perfectly curated, I got to see all of the behind the scenes of our day. It was so special. This is where my love for photographing couples and weddings came from. Through my experience as a bride, I learned to notice and document the moments that may get overlooked but still hold so much significance.
Kenzie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kenzie Cox, I’m a wife and new mom to a sweet baby boy. I’m an intimate wedding and couples photographer, although I do still photograph other lifestyle sessions such as families, seniors, maternity, etc. I’m based out of Kansas City and I love exploring this place and finding unique locations to take my clients to. Something that almost everyone says to me prior to their session/wedding date is “I’m so awkward in front of the camera”. I always try to reassure my clients that I will never leave them hanging without any direction! My goal is to make everyone I photograph feel comfortable and to help them see themselves in a way that they never have before. I know that getting in front of a camera is a super vulnerable thing and I always try to make it as fun and painless as possible.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love this question! Wedding photography is an extremely fulfilling career. To be chosen to photograph one of the biggest days in a couples’ life is something I don’t take lightly. Knowing that not just the bride and the groom will enjoy these photos but also their families, friends and someday their children is so crazy to think about. I’ve always loved photos. Every so often, my family and I enjoy going through old photos from when we were young and we always have so much fun reliving those memories. I love having the opportunity to document special memories for couples and families to look back on and smile at for the years to come. Photos are so important and I love seeing others enjoy them as much as I do.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
At the beginning of this year, I became a mom for the first time! Although I was so excited, I was extremely nervous at how this would affect my business and how hard it would be to juggle work and a baby. This year has definitely been challenging but it has also been my most successful year yet as a photographer. I’ve had the most thoughtful, understanding clients as I’ve learned to navigate this new season of life. Having a full time career and being a mom has meant having to ask for help often and learning to be intentional about how I spend my time when I have help. Thankfully, I have lots of family close by who are so generous and helpful when it comes to watching my baby. My husband and I have the best support group and I truly wouldn’t be able to do what I do without them. This year, I’ve had to limit how many weddings and sessions I take on but these boundaries have been so healthy for me and I’m so thankful to have a job that allows me to flexible. Despite how different this year has looked as a business owner, juggling motherhood and photography is so much more doable than I thought and more than worth it.
