We were lucky to catch up with Kenzi Flinchum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kenzi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always grown up on the creative side of the road. I went to school for Creative Advertising, and one day I had to pick a camera up for a class project–it was game over from there. Taking photos was all I could think about. It led me to see the world differently, look at things from different perspectives, wondering how I could show other people what I saw. From there, I watched YouTube after YouTube video on how to work a professional camera and got one at college graduation. I started volunteering to capture my friends’ love, weddings, family, and now, almost ten years later here I am, a professional wedding photographer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Once I knew I wanted to work in the wedding industry, I started taking chances left and right. I was offering my services for free, volunteering at capturing events, saying yes to anything that would give me experience and practice. After some time, I realized I ended up saying yes to a lot of the right people and it was able to build my reputation in the industry. I’m forever grateful for all the risks and chances I took to get my business off the ground.
I draw inspiration from everywhere, but especially from my clients. Listening to their story, building a genuine relationship, and paying attention to what matters most to them allows me to capture their celebration truly to them and artfully to me. Something I’ve always heard from others is that they can “hear” my images, as if they were there in the moment–there’s no better compliment to me than that. From the beginning, I’ve wanted people to see what I see, and I’m so happy I’m able to do that for so many and have it mean so much in return.
How did you build your audience on social media?
As a photographer, I’ve never posted every single photoshoot or every single wedding I’ve done. I’ve shared my ideal work, my favorite work, the work I’m most proud of– then hashtag the crap out of it, haha. I get A LOT of my new business from social media, and I think that’s from posting what I’m most proud of while making my page, as a whole, aesthetically pleasing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
What’s continued my authentic passion in all of this that I get to create something for my clients that holds one of their favorite moments in time and it lasts forever. The fact that my art is able to carry that sort of value for someone means everything to me.
