We recently connected with Kenya Dalton and have shared our conversation below.
Kenya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? Why or why not?
I love to travel. Vacations are my escape. Technology has evolved so much, even on vacation, everything is content. I get inspired by the new sights and sceneries. Business owners tend to push themselves to the point of burnout, especially when doing things alone. It’s okay to pour into yourself because you can’t provide your best self or service from a empty cup. Take time to rest and recharge.
Kenya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kenya Dalton, I am a 22 year old CEO of Perfect Rx Skincare. Perfect Rx is all about revealing your authentic beauty through skincare. Our products are formulated with natural and chemical ingredients, we are truly where science and selfcare collide. My love of skincare stemmed from childhood, but my business came to be when I struggled with acne and dark spots myself. I found myself trying everything but nothing was working for my melanated skin. I took it upon myself to enroll in esthetician school and it all just clicked. My soap “The Brightening Bar” has went viral multiple times with over 10,000 orders in the past three years of opening. I think what sets me apart from others is my spiritual approach to business. I’m big on gratitude and manifestations and affirmations. You can do anything you put your mind too, especially with God in your corner. My audience has been the biggest blessing to me! It’s always so much hype around my soap. Whenever anyone is struggling with dark spots, acne, or hyperpigmentation… they know who to call!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I remember my first time going viral, I was 18 years old. I was working in the pharmacy at Walgreens while going to school for esthetics. I use to bring my products to school, I was putting cards in the beauty supply store, posting on Facebook. Everything was soap. I was so excited to be selling out of my 20 orders per week! My soap post were going viral constantly the whole month of February and March. I wanted everyone to experience the beautiful of “The Brightening Bar”. I decided on my next restock to leave my website open for 20 minutes and let everyone order. I expected a few hundred orders, little did I know, I would get nearly 6,000 orders in 10 minutes. I closed my website down because I was overwhelming happy, filled with so much joy. As I began prepare for shipment, I got frustrated. This was my first time having this many orders, my cosmetic chemist said it would take 8 weeks to get all the products made, I wasn’t aware of shipping from home, and my inbox was so flooded with messages, my communication skills declined. People started talking negatively about my business. People thought I would scam them. I tried to make post letting everyone know what was going on, but some people were impatient, which was completely understandable. I started feeling defeated. After about 3 months, I finally got all the orders shipped. Results were coming in fast, but I still struggled to build my reputation again after so much coming so fast. I wanted to give up because I was a one woman show. 2 years later, I am finally getting back on track. I understand differently God will never put more on you than you can handle. Things are uncomfortable when you are growing to new levels. My shipping duration is faster. I never take on too much at once. I have my family helping me pack orders and I’m rebuilding relationships and gaining new customers everyday. Everything happens for a reason.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Authenticity is always my answer. I love to market my business by sparking emotions in my customers. I want them to relate. I want my audience to understand that they are not alone. I took the risk of posting me in my most vulnerable state. Feeling insecure in my skin, not feeling pretty, couldn’t leave the house without makeup. I knew people would judge me. I knew people would makes jokes about the state of my skin, but I didn’t care. I knew if I was feeling this way, other people were too. I had to come up with a solution. I decided to make a difference by showing them perfect isn’t just one thing. Perfect is different for each and everyone one of us. Healthy skin is perfect.
