We recently connected with Kentre’ Dixon and have shared our conversation below.
Kentre’ , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name is 27 Waters Media and to break it down originally it was 27 on water media. I used 27 because it was the year I hit rock bottom when I had been on such a career high over the years and committed to myself by starting a Video Editing business that now service’s more. It also represents the day my grandmother passed which was on my birthday on the 27th of August and it was rough but she was such a woman of Faith and always got me in my word which brings the “waters” part of my business name. Being that it was rock bottom I felt as if it was a Faith walk with starting my own business in a state where I don’t really know many people and building it up which is a parallel to “walking on water” I don’t know if I’ll sink but I have Faith in what I’ve started. So that’s the whole background of it.
Kentre’ , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into Video Editing because of my degree In Broadcast Journalism I leaned more into my Video editing skill when I started finding joy creating YouTube videos while in college and really connecting with people while I was doing it. I didn’t know I’d connect and market with as many people as I did while I was in college which urged my curiosity to see what would really happen if I took this serious.
I service any clients that are needing someone to visually tell a story, edit fun content, photography shoots, and sports video editing that captures memories to look back on.
The problem I solve is making something that is engaging enough for people not to scroll past it. What sets me apart from others is I’m willing to go the second mile with my creativity. I’m most proud of the. jumps I’m making to get myself out there whether that is learning what else I can do to add something fresh to my projects, finding more marketing ways to get my self visible, and not giving up in small beginnings.. I want potential clients to know that I’m avidly looking for more projects and to please follow my instagram @27watersmedia
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I used to be heavily focused In sports specifically basketball was my heart all the way up to college there was no plan b, but just to cut to the chase I gave it up and it was the hardest thing to get through when every day I trained to be the best. I was connected to so many coaches and teammates it was probably like ripping my heart out when I stopped playing. I didn’t even go watch any basketball games for like a year if you can get the gist of how hard it was. Now that I look back I’m happy I did because It lit a new fire in myself to never ever give up on myself because I knew how it felt and also I didn’t know I’d discover my new passions I have now that have made me more of who I am now.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
So while in College I started a web series named “Langston Cribs” inspired by the MTV cribs show. It was sparked because it was a school assignment and that year a news station had covered our campus putting our dorm lifestyle in a bad light. So I thought I’d give a better look at it because I knew many of my fellow classmates who had really unique dorms. Well the assignment was only for one episode, but many of the students loved it so much so I kept making them and I was having so much FUN. Then I started getting emails about marketing opportunities. I didn’t go seriously with editing for others after I graduated I started interning everywhere and working for jobs doing it, but year 27 I lost it all and that’s when I created my business and started servicing others again.
