Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kentel Mclemore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kentel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Helping people achieve their dreams!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a kid, I loved music, but never knew what I wanted to do with it. I knew I didn’t want to be artist, so I started work with my brother Redcoat Da Poet on marketing and business side when I was in High School. From there I was drawn to artist management This culminated into Out Da Trunk Management and Studios., which co started with Redcoat Da Poet.
I I manage Panama Jane and DJ Siamese (Skooly’s Tour DJ). Recently, Panama Jane released the third installment of her Hibachi series, which is doing really well. Jane’s album release concert packed the house and we sold out of merch at 529 in East Atlanta Village. Jane is easily one of my favorite people to work with and has the personality of a superstar. Siamese is one of the most talented DJs ever! I literally watched him DJ BACKWARDS! He has the skills to be like Steve Akoi for hip-hop. DJ Siamse throws weekly events at OurBar and Cru on Peter St if you ever want to catch him in action.!
Out Da Trunk Studios is located in Chamblee-Dunwoody, GA. It is an affordable studio package that includes an engineer for upcoming artists. We offer production and writing sessions as well as consultations.
With my journey in the music industry there have been ups and downs with deals that were supposed to come through or deals we signed. These deals were signed where companies didn’t follow through. It’s difficult at times, but I always think back to 2007, when I was facing 10-15 years in prison and lost my father and got through it. Therefore, I always fight and remember everything is mental.
Any advice for managing a team?
Leadership is different for everyone, so you must find a leadership style that suits your personality. Take the time to learn about each individual on your team. Find out what makes them tick, what motivates them, and what makes them happy. There are many ways to build strong bonds, such as eating out, bowling, and playing paintball.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Curtis Jackson’s book “Hustle Hard Hustle Smart” is an excellent resource for entrepreneurs. One big takeaway from the book is that you shouldn’t make the connection between hustle hard and sleeping less. That was one thing that stuck with me.
Each morning, I listen to the YouTube Channel Dare to Motivation. One of my favorites is “Life Without Fear”. One of the greatest lessons in the story is to feel fear in order to gain the courage to grow.
