We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenny Scott Guffey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kenny Scott thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Honestly the most meaningful project I’ve done thus far is my film Rick Nelson: Guntersville. Rick was always important to me, and so selfishly I was making the project as a fan. But then it completely blew up into something else when Billboard Magazine was interested, and it solidified for me how meaningful Rick was to other people as well, and that what we were doing with our film mattered. It went on to win Best Feature at the WILDsound Film Festival and to have that legitimacy that you’re doing something meaningful is always rewarding as an artist.

Kenny Scott, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started podcasting during the pandemic. I hate saying it, but during that time was when I really grew into the creative that I am. We had a lot of fun doing that show. Over the five seasons our cast included myself, Brian Labuda, Dawson Maimon, and actors Joe Piazza, Brandon Ludwig, Zach Bradley, and Trevor Lissauer. Trevor had previously appeared as the character “Miles Goodman” in two seasons of Sabrina The Teenage Witch. He became a mentor to me, and during the run of the show I started getting opportunities from guests to work on film projects. I actually stopped doing the show because I became too busy with film and was no longer able to give the series the time it required. It was the same for all of us I think, Trevor himself has two new singles out, one is called “Get Out of Your Head”, and the other is “A Chance of Sunshine”.
Since those days I’ve worked on alot of projects with other filmmakers and when an old friend, Chris Hooten, re-entered my life, he and I decided to start our own production studio, CK Film & Entertainment. So far, in addition to our films Rick Nelson: Guntersville and 77, we’ve brought actor Greg Sestero to Bowling Green, KY for a special anniversary screening of The Room, and we’ve also produced several specials for the Kings of Horror YouTube Channel. During all of this I’ve published a couple books as well; my memoir For Delilah: An Unexpected Journey, and a horror-comedy novella called Fluck.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Oh for sure! I want to do all I can to build a legacy my daughter can be proud of. Everything I do I do for her. She is my entire life. Shes grown up on sets and sort of knows a little bit of the world. I get proud dad moments when she’s watching a movie and says “oh, that’s a great shot!” I hope if she does pursue a creative path she outdoes me in every way!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is seeing the finished product that began simply as an idea. Being part of that process from idea to finished product is INSANE in all the best ways, and I never get tired of it. With a film for example too, it’s almost like a child in its own way; you work so hard on it, the entire team does, and then when it’s done you send it out into the world and you hope that those it encounters are good to it. You hope it is loved and embraced, which, I’m proud to say Rick Nelson has been the most of anything I’ve worked on. I never expected that.
