Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kenny Lindsey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kenny , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The whole point of me DJing is to make that impact on them through music. I used to go to events and functions that had great music and some of my craziest nights were the ones where I was going through things…those good vibes helped me forget about things that were troubling me at the time. I ultimately wanted to have the same impact on other people by allowing the way I play my music to be an outlet for them to take their mind off the real world things. My OGs taught me a lot about making an impact of the people you DJ for!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Started DJing in 2016, started by going to events that guys like DJ Fat and DJ Louisianimal were DJing and remembering being apart of some crazy nights. It ultimately inspired me to get my own equipment and learn. I was in my room for months just teaching myself and learning how to do just the basic things. Most DJs will tell you it’s a visual thing, you have to see people do things to really pick up on how to do it so it’s hard for someone to just tell you how. After observing my OGs and Deciding what kind of DJ I wanted to be, I decided to go apply it in real time! My first residency was the basement downtown San Antonio and that’s really where I got my foot hold on the DJ game! That is where I grew to know I had potential to be something relevant and make my name and brand something more known in a city I’m not even from!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I first started DJing I had plenty people saying that I couldn’t do it, plenty saying the market was too crowded, older DJs hating on us younger DJs at the time and just a lot of people not wanting to see you win…Work through that, use it as fuel, make it more of a reason to succeed in what you do. I’ve been told no, I’ve been undercut but other DJs, I’ve been talked about by other people/DJs etc, and I don’t let it effect me! I continue to build and grow and God keeps me working! Don’t give up, the biggest most important thing you can invest in is yourself!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
People don’t understand how hard this shit is! Imagine walking into a room full of people and thinking that you gotta play something for everyone of these people to like! The good thing is I’m up for the challenge, being a DJ is harder than it looks, being able to keep the attention of a lot of people at once is a tough task when you really look at it
