We were lucky to catch up with Kenneth Shittu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kenneth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client was actually my good friend Justin. I really had just not even thought about a clothing line at that point i kind of just went and ordered some sued blue hats from ebay and they came in and i told him about how i wanted to sell them and stuff so he ended up buying one from me and modeling it as well. Till this day he is still me good friend and crazy enough he is super stylish and educated about fashion for a college professor . So i get alot of inspiration from him and advice on things .
Kenneth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
my name is Kenneth I am 24 years old I was born in Leightonstone England and was raised in Lagos Nigeria till I was 11 years old. I moved to the U.S right after my 11th birthday and lived in Houston ever since. growing up I was very much into sports. I played almost everything you could think off. but I gravitated towards soccer more. as an athlete I was super focused and determined to make it as a soccer player. on my spare tie growing up I would collect sneakers and resell them. looking back on it I think this was the start of my love for fashion, colors and streetwear. growing up I played around lightly with having a brand with one of my close friends. although it dissolved quickly I knew I was on to something. from there one day I sat on my dinner table with my best friend and made a website. I called it what is today known as “Shisty clothing” Shisty Natives” and my idea was born. my first product was a blue sued hat I really didn’t have a plan for releasing them I kind of just posted it and hoped for the best. soon after that I was selling t shirts out of my dorm. fast forward to today I am totally indulged in fashion and clothes. running my clothing I love it to death it is my absolute passion. I honestly thing fashion has brought new purpose to my life and keeps me going
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I honestly thing the best way to go about social media with a brand is to create an aesthetic that represents the clothing you are making. being consistent with your content is very essential to growth. I’ve honestly seen that if your able to capture the culture behind your clothing in a picture it tends to gravitate towards your audience way more . In regards to how I grew Shisty’s page I would honestly say it was just a testiment to consistency. and hard work in curating dope content honestly. a tip I would definitely say that would help any aspiring business person is the use of various marketing strategies. this is essential to the rapid growth of ones company exponentially. understanding theses key tools provides you with tools to optimize your business while doing less leg work.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I think the best has had to be social media and instagram. just increasing my engagement numbers has grown my audience tremendously. also having events is always a great way to increase your audience and honestly networking is a key tool in the retention of new clients.
