We were lucky to catch up with Kenneth Omovevah recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kenneth, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission for me is to establish a large community of people who understand, apply and benefit endlessly from the healing power of Movement.
In the year 2014, I took interest in contortion. I started practicing with zero equipments and no professional guide. Over time, due to a lack of adequate knowledge and not enough understanding in the art of movement, I was met with a number of injuries. I had knee pain stemming from incorrect splits practices, as well as lower back pain from incorrect backbend practices. I wanted to be flexible and that was it. I didn’t care much for the details or risks involved.
The lower back pain only grew worse as I practiced (still without any professional guide), and after a while I couldn’t walk or sit for more than 30minutes without major discomfort in my lower back and legs.
After a few years, I was making no progress, and had almost completely wrecked my body; so I took a much needed break hoping time would heal me. Pain meds weren’t an option as they only provided very temporary relief and I didn’t want to depend on them long term.
In 2019, I discovered yoga. I took my first class and for the first time, movement didn’t feel forced, painful or exhausting. On the contrary, It felt great. I experienced for the first time, how refreshing movement could be and that’s when it clicked. What if all hope wasn’t lost? What if I could heal my body, and practice contortion again? What if I could teach this too? For the first time in a long time, I was excited about moving and I wanted to learn as much as I could about it.
I started practicing again, this time, following a few YouTube tutorials and only doing what felt right. I wasn’t pushing too much. I was listening to my body and allowed it take its time.
After a while, I got better. I experienced a lot less pain and could finally take on contortion again.
In 2023, I came across a social media AD for Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) and I knew it was time to get serious. I applied, took the training and got certified to teach Yoga. That was a major turning point for me. I’d gained so much knowledge and was almost completely pain free, but I didn’t stop there. I studied more, practiced more, developed a deeper interest in the human body and its response to movement and over time, I healed both my lower back and knee pain completely.
Not long after my certification in 2023, I got employed to work at a gym and I worked there until this year, 2025. In that time, I put my best foot forward and worked hard to not only teach correctly but also learn from different body types.
In January 2025, I announced the launch of my yoga and mobility training studio, KenoPhoenix Studio. I honestly didn’t have the finances to start off initially, but I received a lot of financial support from my best friend, so it all became possible.
It was time to put all I’d learnt over the years to work and I did. It’s only been a few months since I started, but I’ve already helped so many people heal their knee and back pain (just like I’d experienced), get stronger and improve their overall mobility.
Movement brings Mobility and mobility brings Vitality. This is the kind of wellness that I am committed to teaching and practicing. Wellness through the art of movement.
Kenneth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kenneth Omovevah. I’m a Certified yoga teacher and Movement artist with over a decade of contortion practice experience and 2years of professional teaching experience.
I am the CEO and Head Instructor of KenoPhoenix Studio, a yoga and mobility training studio in Lagos, Nigeria, that specializes in helping people build better relationships with their bodies.
I provide yoga training, contortion training and stretch therapy services.
I help people recover from knee and back pain, get stronger and more flexible and improve their overall mobility through movement.
I’ve been told that I practice a little too hard and too much but I think that that level of dedication, discipline and consistency is precisely what sets me apart from others. If you ever get to train under me, you’ll be required to work hard, but all of that work will yield undeniable results.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m no expert but I know these three things have helped me build a decent audience so far; To build a social media presence, you must;
1- SHOW UP. On the good days, on the bad days, with zero followers and zero engagement, with a million followers and viral posts, at 1% and at 100%, just show up. If you don’t show up, your presence cannot be felt.
2- GIVE SOMETHING. If don’t offer any form of value, whether entertaining, or educational, you might get a few hit posts every now and then, but you won’t build a solid community, and you won’t stand the test of time in the social space.
3- BE AUTHENTIC. There’ll be a lot of people doing what you do, but no one else will do it like you can. That’s your power, be original, be yourself.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I didn’t have the capital to start off my business at the beginning, so I decided to reach out to everyone I could for support.
Thankfully the first person I shared my vision with, bought into it entirely and was willing to invest in me and the brand. That person is my best friend. I got lucky to be honest, but luck aside, I had honed my skills and gained enough knowledge to pitch my ideas on a large scale.
There’s still so much to do in setting up the studio of my dreams but I had a vision, the skills and knowledge to back up my vision and I was lucky enough to have a best friend who thankfully had enough financially, to support this vision.
