We were lucky to catch up with Kenneth Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenneth, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been doing photography since about 2011/12 so it was always something I did and worked at but it was more of a side job. Towards the end of 2022 because of what was essentially a conflict of interest, my job and I mutually parted ways as they phrased it. I was forced to make a decision either get another job working for someone else or take something I had been working at and perfecting for a long time. So rather than applying to new jobs I took the leap and dove full time into the world of fulltime photography and videography with DJing which i’d also been doing for a while sprinkled in as well. I had some clients that I worked with previously and they helped by spreading the word. Fortunately for me a few videographers I’d worked with in the past had projects they needed help with, so whereas it was for a lot of work it was essentially a seemless transition. I started filming and photographing sports and that became a large part of my business. With DJing I had/have a Sunday residency and then I get booked for gigs periodically. It has been a journey and a lot has been learned along the way. Knowing what i know now I would for sure approach it differently in the way I branding the type of work I do and how a versatile I am in any field of photography. But overall it has been an experience and a journey I wouldn’t trade.
Kenneth, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kenneth most people call me KB. I am the founder of HoLup Media and Co-Founder of All My Homies LLC. HoLup Media is a photography, videography and graphic design company, while All My Homies is an Entertainment collective housing DJs, hosting, curating, performing for events, music consultants and more. I’ve been doing photography for the last 12 years, videography for the last 9, graphic design for about 9. I walked into photography basically off necessity from starting All My Homies. At its inception we were a collective of rappers and as such we always needed photo or videos but we didn’t have the budget to pay for these service everytime. So I bought a camera, my business partner brought Turntables and from there we photographed and DJ’d our own performances and etc. As a result of doing it for us I got decent enough to start charging to make extra money on the side, then it ultimately turned into a passion that i wanted to learn as much as I could about and also make extra money while i was at it.
DJing after I learned I would always do it but i was a rapper first and foremost. That time in my life came and slowly went but now I get that same thrill I used to get from performing songs I wrote by DJing and blending certain songs to create the perfect vibe and I love the watching the crowd dance and react to whatever combination i put together.
So that all brings me to now being a fulltime Photographer, Videographer and DJ. All things that I love doing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is the Joy expressed by the clients when they see the final product. Whether it’s wedding photos, or sports or fashion or anything, being able to see their facial expression is the best but any joyfull reaction you recieve is fullfilling. Anytime an athlete or a couple changes their profile picture to one you took is like a badge of honor. I overall love that the art I produce or the songs I play can have a positive effect on a persons day.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
So far its been the quality of whatever i’m providing. That then makes the client want to show off what they received and is its own form of promotion. A lot of my business comes from word of mouth and that is always started by the quality of the work they are given. Quality is so important.
