We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenneth Alexander a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kenneth, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue an art career when I understood legacy. Ownership of your own business and name means that I can pass this down to generations. With the creation of my own art technique, I am now able to teach this to the youth and any other aspiring creative to forge their own path. My style has been taught currently in a featured class at University of Memphis, Memphis College of Art and University of Kentucky.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As an artist, my work is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and cultural background. My name is Kenneth Alexander, and my art reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of our world, where the fantastical meets the mundane and the abstract converges with the tangible. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for the creative process, I aim to challenge the boundaries between reality and fantasy, and to spark a conversation about the significance of cultural identity in contemporary art. My background and experiences as a Black American inspire much of my work. I believe that art has the power to shape the future, and through my art, I seek to inspire, educate, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Black Americans. By creating pieces that are both thought-provoking and visually stunning, I bring a new perspective to the conversation surrounding diversity and representation in the art world.
My art is a multi-sensory experience that engages the viewer on many levels. I use color and form to create a visual representation of the internal, emotional and musical landscape of my imagination. I draw inspiration from my love for music, and my pieces are often an ode to the beauty and power of sound. My work invites the viewer to explore the hidden dimensions of their own imagination and to experience a journey of self-discovery.
In my latest works, I continue to explore the theme of the Black experience and its connection to the future. I believe that the Black experience is a vital part of our cultural heritage, and my work celebrates the richness and diversity of this heritage. Through my art, I seek to create a dialogue that highlights the significance of cultural identity and promotes social and cultural awareness.
In conclusion, my art is a powerful representation of the world as seen through the eyes of a creative and imaginative mind. My work pushes the boundaries of what is possible with traditional and digital art techniques, and my unique approach to color, form, and music creates a visual and emotional experience that is truly unparalleled. My aim is to inspire, educate, and celebrate, and I hope that my work can spark conversations and challenge perspectives in the art world and beyond.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Buy art! Support the local artists in your area and acknowledge it as any other business you genuinely want to support on a consistent basis. Create more jobs that require different artistic needs and that are salary based.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I moved into my latest apartment 7 years ago, I was fired from my job two weeks before. Not knowing how I was going to maintain my new home, I sold my art and did a panel in a festival in Memphis and conducted my own exhibition at Crosstown Arts called Frame Traps. The show was a success and was able to make rent the next month. So that gave me time plan ahead and stay afloat as an artist.
