Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kennedy Steinman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kennedy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I’d love to say that if I had a chance, I would start my career sooner, but truthfully I feel like I started my journey at the perfect time in my life.
At the time I was working a serving job that, while I loved, I was feeling burnt out with as well as going to school for a career path that I knew wouldn’t be a good fit for me. I needed a change and was encouraged by my parents to take a chance at a personal interest.
I started cosmetology school in 2019, 4 months prior to the COVID-19 shut down. In hindsight, going to school during the pandemic allowed me to lock in and focus completely on studying, although it was a challenge to learn hair via Zoom!
Had I started earlier, I wouldn’t have had the discipline to push through the difficulties. Had I started later, I likely would never had made the switch at all.

Kennedy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been behind the chair for 3 years! I am a balayage and vivid color specialist as well as a special effects makeup artist. I have always found the beauty industry so fascinating but never thought I could make a career out of it. My parents encouraged me to follow my heart and passions and I never looked back. They are and always have been my biggest supporters.
When a client sits in my chair my goal is for them to leave with even a little more love for themselves. To me, it’s all about that look on their faces when I turn them to the mirror. I like to call appointments ‘hairapy sessions’ because I want my clients to feel comfortable enough with me to speak freely and feel better both mentally and physically after.
I would say i am most proud to be apart of an industry that boosts the confidence of people. I am also incredibly proud to have the absolute best clients anyone could ask for!
I want any potential client to know that my chair is a safe space for whatever they need and I will always be transparent and honest with them about their hair goals and the steps to take to get there. The goal is beautiful, healthy hair!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is being able to turn my passions and love into a career. I get to spend my days collaborating with my clients and coworkers to create the absolutely stunning renditions of their visions that they walk around with. I feel incredibly fulfilled by the thought of putting my heart and soul into my work and taking these thoughts and turning them into reality.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the absolute best thing anyone can do for an artist or creative is encouraging them and being that support system for them. Word of mouth and supporting their small businesses goes a long way for creatives and artists in their careers. All anyone in a creative field wants is to share their passion and art, the best thing anyone can do is show us love and encourage us.
