We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kennedy Rivers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kennedy below.
Kennedy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Many wedding videos today are more journalistic in a sense. Minimal camera movement, natural lighting, no modifiers, a lot of gimbal work. I like to bring as many techniques from cinema to each wedding I film. I like to use things like motivated lighting, handheld camera movements, back lighting, and dramatic color grades to make a video that feels more like film. This requires a large amount of on the go planning and adaptability. It also requires a large amount of gear and resources but I think the end result is worth it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
K&M Productions is your one stop shop for professional media. We’re a couple who decided not to specialize in one field but to become great in as many fields as possible. We love the creative process and love bringing the vision of others to life. In a world of low quality media, we want to preserve the beautiful parts of life in the most true vision of our clients. A core principle of our business is we will continue to stay affordable. In a climate where expenses continue to outgrow wages, we want to keep the barrier to quality media low. We don’t want income to be a barrier.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, it has to be run and gun filming. You’re given minimal time, if any, for setup and you go into a situation with a loose idea of what you need to capture. It’s fast paced and high intensity. Editing it is like a puzzle. You look at all the clips you captured and you lace them together in a way that tells the story you envisioned. There are limitless combinations. The order of the clips, the length, the music, the audio, the focal length, the camera movement, the color grade. All of these factors to consider. When you piece it together and the client is ecstatic, it is the most satisfying thing on this Earth.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We’re lucky enough to have great day jobs that take care of our living expenses so we’re donating a large amount of our time in passion projects. We’ll find a local creative and do a large amount of branding for them, for free, in hopes to bring awareness to small local business owners. Things like branding photos, highlight and promo videos, mini documentaries, and BTS content. It’s also rewarding for us since we learn about their life and usually make a life long friend.
