We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kennedy Intorre; Sarah Caro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy Intorre; Sarah Caro, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Nymeria Publishing’s driving force is to give a platform to marginalized voices and through that we have been able to meet amazing people and publish impactful stories. Every single person we work with has a story that is truly worth hearing! A few examples that stick out in our minds are Joiya Morrison-Efemini, Emmett Ferree, and Meghan Zipin. Joiya’s collection, Darker Sister, captivates readers with a deep sense of civil justice with her powerful commentary on living during our country’s current state of racism. Emmett’s book, A Citrus Kind of Love, crushes the heart of anyone who opens it and then pours lemon juice into the wound. He has such a hauntingly beautiful way of telling the story of the loss of the love of his life. It’s a collection that truly leaves you sobbing. Lastly, Meghan’s collection, First Light, serves as a guide from living with PTSD as a surviving of the Boston Marathon Bombing, her experience with healing, relationships, and motherhood. It is a story that you walk away from fully understanding that we as people can and will keep going, through any adversity.

Kennedy Intorre; Sarah Caro, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Nymeria Publishing was created out of curiosity, sheer willpower, passion, and creativity.
It’s still growing, always growing and evolving with us and the industry (and the world itself) but at its core, Nymeria Publishing is by and for the heroic stories of warriors. We not only strive to shine a light on unheard or marginalized voices but also to help authors have control over their work. We bridge the gap between authors and getting their work out there on their own terms.
We got to where we are today through so much sacrifice and hard work on both of our ends. But we certainly would not be anywhere without the dedication and support of the wonderful authors we work with and the amazing community that has surrounded us!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We actually pivoted our business model this year! Nymeria started out as a Traditional publisher, meaning that the only contracts offered were non-compensation-based. After hitting our fourth year we were unfortunately hit with the fact that this business model is not sustainable for our fast growing company. It limited us incredibly to not only the amount of authors we could bring on but also limited our reach. It limited the tools we were able to access to grow both as a company and provide a marketable space for our authors. So now, we are operating as a Hybrid publisher. This allows us to offer so much more to our current and future authors. We can now provide a space for our growth and be a force for those working with us to profit in the publishing industry.
Publishing is a crazy place to navigate, especially for new authors, and we always want to be a safe place for writers and readers alike. We have said it time and time again that putting the research into what publishing company is right for you can really make or break your publishing experience and is genuinely one of the most important, if not the most important steps to take.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Sarah and I met back in 2013 on the first day of my junior year and her senior year of high school. We sat next to each other in Honors Prob and Stats class. It was my first year at this school and had absolutely no friends so I was terrified! Our teacher had us tell 3 fun facts about ourselves to the 3 people sitting near us, and since that day we have been friends! Our friendship has survived 11 years, college, moving, relationships, and starting a business together. Forever thankful to be working with my best friend.
